I was searching for a directional antenna that would allow me to connect to a wireless access point near my home. My Linksys PCMCIA card with its built-in antenna was able to connect only during low noise [radio frequency (RF)] conditions.

I purchased the SMC high power PCMCIA wireless card (with removable antenna) and then purchased the SMCHMANT-6 antenna. It came with all of the cables and connectors needed to connect to the PCMCIA card. The results were impressive. Using NetStumbler software, I saw a considerable gain in the received signal strength using the high power card and external antenna over the Linksys wireless card. The combination also revealed other access points that were not visible with the Linksys card alone.

I would recommend the SMC high power card with the Hawking HAI15SC Hi-Gain 15dBi Corner Antenna if you are on the fringe of your access point's signal. I use the combination and have never experienced a loss of connection.
