From Amazon.co.uk

It begins with a twittering of birdsong lifted from "Across the Universe." And once the triple-tracked a capella harmonies of "Because" enter, followed by snatches from "A Hard Day's Night" and "The End," leading into a fired-up "Get Back," it becomes obvious that this is far more than just another Beatles compilation. This is Love, conceived by the Fabs' former producer George Martin and son Giles as a stageshow soundtrack to Cirque de Soleil's Las Vegas spectacular of the same name, but appears to have taken on a life of its own. Whereas the Beatles' last release, 1, delivered the (over?) familiar hits in a nice, simple package, Love is a mélange of the familiar and obscure, all literally mixed together in one 78-minute audio collage which succeeds in reminding the listener just why the Beatles truly are, as Lennon put it, "toppermost of the poppermost." There's no new Beatles material per se, but the songs are all approached differently--some are cut together in a flawlessly mixed medley (check out "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!/I Want You/Helter Skelter"), some reassemble different backing tracks and vocal performances to create new spins on old classics; but all the songs are revitalized considerably. Even in its weakest moments (which probably work better in the context of the show itself), Love is still a formidable prospect, and one has to admire Martin's willingness to go out on a limb with such a project. While purists may complain that the cut 'n' paste nature of the project is simply tampering with perfection, at the very least it'll make them reach for the originals and enjoy them all over again. For newcomers and everyone else, it makes a fine listen, both in its sonic clarity (the actual tracks are the best they've sounded on CD) and audacious nature. --Thom Allott <P> <span class="h1"><strong>More from the Fab Four</strong></span><BR> <span class="tiny"></span> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="4" cellpadding="4"> <tr align="center" valign="top" class="tiny"> <td width="33%"> <img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000EQHXQY.01.SWATCHZZ.jpg" border="0"><BR> The Capitol Albums, Vol. 2</td> <td width="33%"> <img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002UAR.01.SWATCHZZ.jpg" border="0"><BR> Revolver</td> <td width="33%"> <img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002UAU.01.SWATCHZZ.jpg" border="0"><BR> Sgt. Album Description

FIRST TIME EVER SPECIAL EDITION will include both the stereo CD and a BONUS AUDIO DVD packaged in a digi-package with O-card. The DVD is audio only and will contain 81 minutes of music in both 5.1 surround sound and stereo (presented in DVD-Audio MLP, DTS, Dolby and PCM). <P>"Love" is a fascinating reworking of numerous classic Beatles recordings by the band's original producer, Sir George Martin, and his son Giles. "Love" is also the title of the highly successful Cirque du Soleil show, a co-production with Apple Corps featuring the music of the Beatles, currently wowing audiences in Las Vegas. In creating the music for the show and for the album, George and Giles have created a continuous "soundscape"--a series of well-known Beatles songs augmented by additional instrumentation and vocals taken from their vast bank of original multi-track tapes. If you can imagine "Strawberry Fields Forever" beginning with John's original demo before going into an early take of the song and then climaxing in a musical collage including the piano solo from "In My Life" and the harpsichord pattern from "Piggies" and lots, lots more--or "Get Back" prefaced by the "Hard Day's Night" opening guitar chord, the guitar and drum solos from "The End," and segued into "Glass Onion," you will begin to get the picture. But hearing is believing! The guys have pushed back the boundaries and come up with a brand-new work that will add to the enduring legacy of the band. The result is an amazing album that not only reinforces the timeless quality of the group's recordings--the fans will have fun enjoying the roller-coaster experience of the album whilst trying to spot where all the pieces come from--it is also destined to open up a new legion of fans to the Beatles experience.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Same music with a fresh spin.......2007-06-13

I wasn't sure if I'd like this because usually, when I hear a different version of a Beatles tune (usually a cover) it's just not as good as the original.

With LOVE, the songs are a little different, but with George Martin doing the work on the remixes, it still sounds like something the Beatles might have released at the time, and it's very enjoyable.

The one song I wasn't thrilled with was gnik nus (a back tracked version of Sun King)

5 out of 5 stars Something Different and Special.......2007-05-21

I agree with the spotlight reviews that I saw on page 1 of this site. Yes it is wonderful to hear the Beatles in ear popping, 2006, technological splendor. George Martin has always been a genious with the Beatles' music, and with his son Giles, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. It's nice to know that the torch has been passed to a family member. In the hands of Giles Martin this music will continue to shine. I particularly love the tasteful string arrangement added to Harrison's Anthology version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and George's voice sounds so clear, it tingles the spine. It is actually an emotional experience to hear, as are several of the tracks on this cd. A standout for me is, I Want to Hold Your Hand, live at the Hollywood Bowl. You can hear every note of George's guitar, and their voices sound so life like, I feel like I am sitting on the stage with them. Mind you, this is a 1964 recording of a live show, and it sounds that good. As a sonic experience, it is eons away from the 1977 Hollywood Bowl Album. I was disappointed that it was so brief. It then segues into a combo of Help and What You're Doing which is also great. If this brief snippit of the Hollwood Bowl concert is any indication, then why haven't the entire Bowl concerts from 1964 and '65 been issued on cd with this mind boggling sound quality? I understand that Apple/EMI/Capitol/Paul/etc. doesn't want to cheapen the Beatles original catalogue with too much product, and I agree with that. But please this one double or triple cd would be so lovely to have. I just don't see any reason why it hasn't been issued. It would certainly sell, especially since there are no live Beatles albums to be had...legitimently that is.

In the mean time, while I'm waiting...and waiting... for my Hollywood Bowl cd,this Love cd is a very different and welcome edition to my collection. I bought it in November while I was out doing my Christmas shopping, and played it for the first time while baking for Thanksgiving, and as any Beatle listener will tell you, it is unbelievable. My kids, ages 11 and 14(both Beatle fans since birth) couldn't believe what they were hearing. My 14 year old saying, "WHAT IS THIS?" "What did they do to the songs?" You will have to hear it to understand it. While it is not a substitute for the original cds, it is still fun to listen to. Paul and Ringo loved it and spurred the Martins on, and that's not surprising, considering the Beatles quircky sense of the absurd, and refusal to take themselves seriously. I know John and George would have been thrilled also. You will too, but don't buy this one if you don't already have the 13 original cds. Nothing can replace those cds. 'Love' is just a fun change of pace for Beatlephiles.

5 out of 5 stars LIKE NOTHING ELSE EVER!.......2007-05-21

This album is incredible to say the least. There are no words to describe my reaction to this revised remixed body of work, but I'll give it a shot anyway.

Not only is the content beyond anything you may have already purchased or heard, specific to any pre-released Beatles compilation, but the "SUPER-QUALITY" of George Martin's immeasurable remastering of the original recordings, as well as his unique and imaginative "reorganization" of the arrangements and tracks, is of historical proportions. The quality "remastered" sound of these older tracks is amazing. No kidding.

I find it incredible that the effort put into this musical production which was from the begining, ear-marked for the Cirque du' Soleil show "Beatles Love", currently running in Las Vegas, has become somewhat of legendary piece of music, in and of itself. From begining to end this production takes you on a "Magical Mystery Tour" of sorts of all the Beatles musical contributions. All wrapped up in a tidy and concise feast for your ears. Shouldn't really surprise any of us, in light of the source material coming from one of the greatest rock bands in history.

For Beatle fans throughout the world, as well as casual admirers of the Fab Four's musical contributions, this album recolors what it was like to be around back then, as the music was being created. The big difference is in how impressive the sound quality is. Your experinces in life, love and music will all come back to you like never before.

The DVD version (I own both versions), is beyond anything you've ever heard as well, in that George Martin utilizes true 5-channel encoding adding an element of fun to the listening experience. I do prefer the CD version over the DVD version for accurate listening however, as it best recreates what the music sounded like back in the day.

Simply stated; Superb. A must have. Especially while listening in the car.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Beatles Love DVD.......2007-05-13

Beautiful, full sound from this audio DVD - amazing to hear the Beatles in such an original and vivid recording - not sure how they did this (original sound tracks?) - but this DVD is likely hearing their instruments played live. I was tried of hearing the Beatles until I heard this, now I love the music once more.

5 out of 5 stars Take a sad song and make it better!.......2007-05-13

The real stars of this one are not the Beatles but the Martins!

Father and son producer team George and Giles have done such a brilliant job "mashing" the Beatles work that you really start to believe it's the lads themselves who are all alive and well and back together and decided, "Hey, let's have a laugh and do a live show in Vegas where we deliberately mess about with the arrangements!"

The end result is not unlike the experimentation from the Sgt. Pepper and Abbey Road albums (music played backwards, medleys, segues and whatnot) so this is PERFECTLY in keeping with the Beatles' well-known eccentric sense of humour.

Above all, IT WORKS, astonishingly well. Stuff like combining Come Together with the backing of Dear Prudence actually gives the Fabs a harder, tighter, more symphonic, more rocking sound than they did before. And, believe me, if you're not up dancing at such ingenious medleys as Drive My Car/What You're Doing/The Word and Revolution/Back In The U.S.S.R., there's something terribly wrong with you. There I was, a grown man, going "This is SO COOL!!"

Anyway! This is infinitely preferable than another boring old greatest hits collection. If you want a FUN alternative to your usual Beatles listening experience, this is it. An upbeat, refreshing, uniquely creative achievement. And remember...this project originated with George Harrison. Can't get much more legit than that!
