Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Network Connection Defective.......2007-04-26

This printer works fine as a USB printer, but it does not connect to a network. HP will not replace, says it must be something wrong with my network. Nevermind the 2 other printers, 2 Macs, and 3 WinXP computers connected to it.

No more HP for me.

5 out of 5 stars Inexpensive Duplex Color Laser.......2007-04-10

I bought the 2605dn because it is the first networked duplex color laser (to my knowledge) that isn't ridiculously expensive.

Everything is stable and robust; no problems running off USB or ethernet. No misfeeds, color and text both look nice. I mainly print documents with color figures/charts, so I can't speak to printing pictures.

Not blazingly fast (~10ppm) and the printer pauses to calibrate itself once in a while, but it's a great deal overall.

Printed 3903 color pages with the original cartridges ($0.08-0.09 per page).

5 out of 5 stars Great printer.......2007-03-25

I have had this printer for several months now and have printed a wide variety of material from plain paper, to cardstock, envelopes and labels. All work perfectly without misfeeds. The only trick is to set the paper type in Properties when printing so it will go slower for thick stock.

It's not photo quality, but great for brochures, marketing material, etc.

It's quiet and fast. The duplexing works amazingly well.

I recommend this printer highly.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful output.......2007-03-22

I am always so impressed with HP. Their products are always good performers. When I bought this printer I knew that I was entering a new sphere of potential problems as this is my first color printer. I avoided them because they relied on inkjet-type technology and I knew that the printer was only a carrier of those costly ink replacement packages. Also, old printer that were inexpensive technologies could not duplex. When I saw this model my heart rose because they are toner cartridge based (four colors; black, blue, red, yellow). I knew that four toner cartridges cost more, and 'Boy Howdy' it costs about $300 to replace them all after a professed 3,500 copies. It also duplexes and does speciality papers, including, they say, card stock (heavier paper, such as postcards).

Now for my review. The color is excellent! Duplexing works well and I find that the product produced is exactly what I need. Now for my negatives. I am used to printers that always available. You need to printer something, your printer is on, you send it, it prints. When not used it moved to a 'snooze mode', waiting for that next request. My last work horse is a HP 1100 black/white laser printer. This new, color model has a problem in that it goes through cycles of re-"calibration", is not available, or when you send a print job later, it can't handle it. This is really annoying! Another negative is that I frequently submit jobs that print part of the paper and then tells me that this job could not be printed. I then get messages that I must restart the printer. When I do, it begins to print the entire job from the beginning. Talk about a toner-eating monster! About 20% of the paper printed is a waste.

I think that this is a new model and the software that manages the system is still not fully debugged. I use my printer in a single computer, home office. It is connected by an USB (Not a CAT5 cabled network). I find that I must turn off the printer until I need it, and then if I don't have another job to print, turn it off.

I don't know how a network of computer can access this without having problems.

Don't get me wrong. This produces excellent results but may need software upgrades by HP to make it less annoying.

UPDATE: Problems solved..
Here is an update from my review. Working with the help desk at HP, they discovered that I had an old version of the firmware. Once they helped me give the device a 'new brain', all the problems that I had disappeared. The help received from HP was excellent and Debbie spent over an hour with me to trouble shoot the problems with printing. Since this solution, there has been no problems printing. As per the choice of selecting only output from the black toner cartridge in order to save the others, the jury is still out. It appears that even with all black text that some of the other three cartridge's toner is used.

If possible, I would change my rating for this printer from three stars to 5 stars. This printer serves all my needs with excellent color representation.

4 out of 5 stars It works fine. Not the best but acceptable for its price.......2007-03-19

To my eyes, the printer's rendition of colors is above average. It isn't horrible but neither is it the best. Pricewise it's an excellent deal with the 64mg of memory and the duplex feature.

We've been using this hp quite a lot to generate mailing labels via Tray 2 (the default paper supply) and haven't any problems. The manual (electronic file) advises "Never print on the same sheet of labels more than once or print on a partial sheet of labels." So it's a pity that the rest of a multiple mailing label sheet has to be tossed for just one label.

A wonderful quality of experience is the near "instant on" (very minimal warmup) feature and it's quiet. My previous Okidata c5300 was a noisemaker and was turned on only just before printing. Its time delay was also a disadvantage. I think most people will be very happy with the HP.
