Now you can eliminate the need for extra dedicated telephone lines with the ComSwitch 5500. Use the ComSwitch 5500 to automatically route calls to your phone, answering machine, fax OR modem - all on a single line!It lets up to 3 devices - usually a telephone, answering machine, fax or modem - share a single phone line. When you add a second or third phone number to your single line, the CS 5500 works smoothly with Distinctive Ring service offered by most local phone companies (different companies have various names for this service; check with your phone company for details). In short, the CS 5500 is able to recognize specific ring patterns assigned to your different phone numbers and route calls to the right device. The CS 5500 immediately answers every call in the "Automatic" mode. If you prefer to have all your extension phones ring normally, the "Semi-Automatic" mode is also selectable. The choice is yours. It is possible for the CS 5500 to work with Voice Messaging from the phone company (requires Distinctive Ring service activation). The system is also compatible with Caller ID service (requires service activation). Remote Message Notification - Never miss another important message while you're away. Every time you receive a voice message, fax document or data transmission, the CS 5500 will automatically send a special tone message to any desired telephone number - local or long distance. (Not compatible with tone pagers.) The CS 5500 is so smart it stays on the line during every call, listening for tone commands you send from the keypad of a telephone. So you can talk for a few minutes, push three keys, and transfer the call to your fax machine to receive a document.

Very easy to setup and then just forget about it. It detects the distinctive ring and routes to the fax; standard ring routes to the phone and the caller ID works!

Phone/Fax switch on DSL line.......2007-03-29

This switch works exactly as advertised to automatically detect whether an incoming call is a Fax or a phone call, and route it appropriately. Our phone has a built in answering machine, so we are not using the feature to route to a separate answering machine.

The incoming line is a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). The installation instructions indicate that two line filters are needed, so we have it installed that way. We have also tried it with just one filter and it appeared to work correctly in our quick test (fyi for those who don't have two line filters handy).

We have "distinctive ring" service on our phone line: the line has a second number associated with it; when that number is dialed the phone rings but with a distinctive "short-short" burst rather than the normal ring. This device allows us to use this second number as a dedicated fax number. It senses the distinctive ring and routes the call to a fax machine (or, in our case, to a desktop computer that also receives faxes). When the phone rings normally, the call is not rerouted--we can pick it up or our answer machine will if we don't. We have found the device very reliable over a month's use; once set up, you can forget it, it just works. I'm not sure how. It is connected to one of three extension jacks for this number; the answer machine and another phone are on a second line, but this is no problem.

It has one important limitation: the only distinctive ring it can sense is the "short-short"--our phone company also offered other options. If you chose another option, you have to revise that choice to the short-short ring for this device to work. The device also requires programming to align it with your setup. It comes configured for a setup in which there is no distinctive ring service. In that case, the device apparently senses whether the incoming call is from a fax machine or is a voice call, and responds appropriately. I have no experience with that function. To set it up for my situation, I had to call the support line, as I was not successful using the instructions that came with it. But the support line worked ok, there was very little wait, and i got someone who was able to help with little difficulty. A more convenient programming set up is all the device needs for a five star rating, in my estimation.

This product is working as advertised so far. It will switch a fax over to the fax machine when it hears a fax tone being transmitted, or put the voice call through to the voice line if appropriate.

This Comswitch worked right out of the box for me. I didn't change anything. My setup is an ADSL incoming line that I've got 3 filters on. I might be ok with 2 but I had an extra and some reviews had indicated a need for more. Beyond that, it's connected as the installation instructions indicate for automatic with phones and an answering machine. If a fax is received, my phones never ring, just the fax machine. If it's a voice call my phones ring until I answer or my answering machine answers. It was that simple.
