Customer Reviews:
Faulty front port stopped working after 10 days.......2007-05-31
Cons: The front, quick-access USB port stopped working after 10 days. From the beginning, the connection was not good--cables had to be pushed in hard to achieve a connection. Just poor quality in the item. I'm awaiting a replacement from Amazon now, and will update this review if the new unit is better/lasts longer than a month. I would give it 4 stars if the ports worked on mine.
Also, the supplied 2-inch patch cables are totally useless, unless you place the unit directly under a Mac Mini (which has its own problems of port access, as other reviewers have noted).
Pros:
It does look great.
The latest versions ship with good rubberized feet so slipping is no longer a problem.
It fits *perfectly* under the current iMac models--it's the same size as the iMac's aluminum "foot," and strong enough to support the iMac's weight.
The front access ports are convenient (or would be, if they worked).
UPDATE 05/30/07: Amazon has notified me that they are no longer carrying this device, so I guess I won't be getting a replacement from them after all. (It's only offered on Amazon thru third-party sellers now.) Not a good sign, I'd say.
Great for low power devices, not so hot for powering hard drives or your scanner........2007-05-11
This is a handy device for keeping your Powerbook's usb and firewire ports free for your hard drives, scanner, and printer. It's ok for powering your mouse or Wacom, but anything requiring more power simply won't function. If you have a Powerbook G4 with 2 usb's and 1 firewire port, you'll still need more ports if you do video editing or have several hard drives. I was hoping this would solve my lack of ports problem, but I still have to swap out a drive or a printer every time I want to scan something. I have not noticed the noise others complain about, but be warned it is bulky and the cables it comes with are absurdly short and poorly designed (3 inches), which means this thing takes up a lot of table space and is RIGHT there all the time reminding you that you should've shopped around for a sturdier hub with a power adaptor and a better designed product. Maybe great for Mac Minis - but not that functional for G4 Powerbooks.
stops working.......2007-04-23
I have been having this problem ever since I got it: the USB-connected devices (keyboard, webcam) stop functioning. The firewire ones (iPod and external HD) keep receiving power and working correctly. I have looked for solutions but have found none. I am using a G4 Powerbook.
Perfect for iMac.......2007-04-10
This thing fits perfectly on my iMac's stand. If you put some velcro on it, it won't slide around either. BUS powered is nice too, just make sure you have your own cords (firewire and USB). eg Zen Micro USB 5 Pin Mini Connector & 6 Pin to 6 Pin IEEE-1394 Firewire Cable-2 Meters.
Belkin USB / Firewire 6 - port - hub for the Mac Mini.......2007-04-09
Once I set up the UPS, the keyboard, mouse, the device was ready to be use.
I had to buy an additional fire wire cable as the one provided was designed for the G4 Power-PC Mac Mini, the Intel Mac Mini has a slightly different port arrangement, once that is done, the hub is ready, and the two front ports are not only practical they are convenient. Very good product at a reasonable price, perfect companion for the Mac Mini.
