Product Description
Microsoft Optical Desktop Elite for Bluetooth - Keyboard and Mouse -
Customer Reviews:
Great....when it works.......2007-05-26
Both the keyboard and mouse are comfortable and work well when connected. The problem is that the connections break way too easily and are often difficult to reestablish. I thought it might be that I was using the laptop's integrated Bluetooth but using the supplied USB dongle instead fairs no better.
The mouse was so problematic that I gave up and went back to a wired mouse. The keyboard disconnects after a few minutes of inactivity and reconnecting often takes several attempts manually through the Bluetooth Manager, in many cases having to remove the batteries in the keyboard and reinstall them to get it to connect. This is not a battery issue as the same batteries will then continue to work for days.
It seems that all the improvements in mice have been focused on bluetooth wireless products. I can't find a 'state of the art' wired mouse and this experience has made me hesitant to even consider another bluetooth mouse or keyboard.
Works as promised.......2007-05-22
Been using it with Windows XP for about a month now. Keyboard and mouse are part of a living room setup. The software drivers installed without a problem, though it was difficult identifying which package to pull off of the MS site. The BT dongle is somewhat fragile, but it's in an out of the way spot.
The only lag I've encountered in either component occurs when the keyboard first connects. Mouse sensitivity is good. Media and programmable keyboard keys are easy to set up.
I'd buy this again.
Very Good Duo Except For Missing Caps Lock Indicator.......2007-05-22
I like this combination. The keyboard is very functional and the mouse is multi-functioned, comfortable and precise. The keyboard has five programmable hot keys which are all the more functional because there are pre-programmed keys for My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, Mail, Web/Home and messenger. The keyboard also has a built-in mouse wheel and media controls which adds to the keyboard functionality. The F1 - F12 keys also have dual functions via an F Lock key, so F1 can also be Help, F2 - Undo, F3 - Redo, F4 - New etc. I don't use these much because my brain is more attuned to how each of these functions are called in the programs I use. What I do find useful is the double sized delete key.
I have read some comments that the Bluetooth mice are not as precise as regular wireless and corded mice. I use Photoshop fairly often and have seen no reduction of precision.
My biggest complaint is that there is no Caps Lock or Num Lock indicator light. I am not a touch typist - SO i oFTEN gET tHINGS lIKE tHIS - and have to back them out.
Using Vista, I had to go to the net to get updated drivers - but this was almost an automatic process and added only about five minutes to an otherwise straight forward installation.
constant disconnects.......2007-05-15
The keyboard and mouse constantly disconnect from the computer (Vista). You have to go through the whole process of pairing the devices, and even then often the computer won't recognize the keyboard and/or mouse. Bottom line: it's useless.
The feet are considered an "accessory".......2007-05-02
Bought this for my wife. It has worked wonderfully well for a year. Then she broke one of the plastic feet on the back that hold the thing at a comfortable typing angle.
After hours of searching, I find out from Microsoft that the feet are considered an accessory and are 1) not covered by the 36 months "parts" warranty, and 2) not to be found. "Maybe you could visit a local computer store to see if they have any old keyboards around".
We paid over $100 for this thing and it is rendered almost unusable (yes, I exagerate but only a little) by the absence of one 37 cent part. OK, knowing Microsoft "if" they sold it, it would be a $10.95 part.
Trouble is, I do not know that Logitech would be any different.
So if nothing breaks or falls off, this is a really good keyboard.
