Product Description

NETGEAR's FS726 series Modular Fast Ethernet Switch gives you two uplink bays for copper or fiber gigabit modules. It lets you link up to high-speed servers, connect switches, and combine fiber and copper networks. And whether you need gigabit uplink or additional port capacity, you'll have the flexibility to upgrade your network as your business grows and as your budget allows. The high-speed, auto-sensing, 10/100 Mbps ports in the FS726 series support Auto Uplink for easy-to-use, automatic configuration. They also provide non-blocking, wire-speed filtering and forwarding of traffic. Easy-to-read, front LEDs show ongoing switch status and simplify troubleshooting.

I'm sure you've all heard the adage, "If something seems too good to be true, it probably isn't" - well that applies to the NetGear FS726TNA.

It appears to be an attractively priced "smart switch" to use NetGear's terminology, and offers some management capability, including SNMP and STP, we are told, with the addition of a firmware upgrade, available Q2, 2005.

In early September - Q3, 2005 - I bought a pair of them, no SNMP, no STP, the current firmware is buggy and the "management" web server feature hangs, essentially turning it into an unmanaged (dumb?) switch.

Tech support is either clueless on the workings of SNMP or tried to "fast talk" their way around questions, I'm not certain which, but neither bodes well for a user in need of help.

We're now into Q4, 2005, and no sign of the promised upgrade, if what you need is an inexpensive, managed switch, I can not recommend this one.
