4 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-05-24

I just got this unit yesterday and havent had a whole lot of time to test everything out. First thing I did was get the newest firmware installed and its a great improvement. I am using 2 Samsung Spinrite T-series 500GB Hard drives in the NAS in a RAID 1 config. They are fast as heck and very quiet, in fact the only noise I can hear is a faint one from the fan on the back of the unit. I would definately suggest this unit to anyone for home or work that needs an easy to setup and use backup system that can be accessed from any networked computer or even setup the ftp server and access it from anywhere. The included backup software needs some improvement but thats it. I have no trouble accessing the nas from my xp machine or my vista ultimate machine, both found it right away and had no problem mapping the drive! Great buy especially with the RAID 1 mirroring option you cant get on most external hard drive systems.

I actually have bought 2 units and have no complain on it...great to be use as a real cheap file server

5 out of 5 stars Works Great For ME!.......2007-04-05

I jsut got mine today and was a little worried after reading some reviews. Setup went smooth and took just a few min. Upgraded the firmware from dlinks page = easy . . . and in less than 10 min. I was transferring files to it. moving files is as easy as drag and drop. I got mine with 2 500 GB hd and am running raid 0. A full 5 stars!

4 out of 5 stars Has Issues. Very Promising........2007-03-12

I've been waiting for someone to come out with a decent RAID1 Home NAS for a while and this unit has great potential. I knew it had issues but the new 1.02b bios has clear up most of them, and it should only get better.

The first problem I had was that the Easy Search utility did not see the unit on my network. I run DHCP, but not on the default space (192.168.0.x). One I got the IP of the unit in my IP space, all was well and I logged into the web admin interface.

The second problem I had was that the firmware upgrade progress page never really tells you it's done. At some point, it just gets to 100%, but still says "don't reboot or power off the unit during the upgrade". At some point, I figured it was done and just rebooted the thing.

After that I had numerous problems with large amounts of file copies not working, freezing, aborting or throwing "network name no longer available" or "file in use by another process". As it turned out, those were completely problems of my own doing. Make sure your firewall, or the Windows firewall is not blocking ICMP as this makes Windows File Sharing cranky.

Once I corrected those problems, file copies went without issue and I was able to transfer about 4-5GB from my file server to the NAS.

I'm not using the uPnP, FTP Backup or iTunes features so I can't comment on them. But for file storage this unit is just fine with the latest firmware. And for the price of it and a couple of cheap 200GB SATA drives, the price point can't be beat.

4 out of 5 stars Buggy, but im still hopeful.......2007-03-11

I just bought this device and wanted to share some key points with you.
By the way I upgraded the firmware to the latest version 1.2b.

1) The drive can not be configured in any way until you install a harddrive and let the NAS format it. This means that if you don't pick a drive that the original firmware supports your out of luck.

2) There are far to many Firefox related bugs to mention so if you want to configure this drive make sure you can access the NAS from the IE browser.

3) They still have bugs related to file names. I have gotten numerous warnings that a file name is too long. However, the file name is usually less than 30 characters. I have made tests and found that file names that it originally reported as an error can actually be copied to the NAS individually with out error. I think the error arises when trying to copy directories of thousands of files. Also it is a bit scary when it messes up due to this warning. For me it created an entire subtree where every file and directory name was truncated to 8 characters. It does seem however that if you choose the "auto rename" option when you get this error everything works fine (however, I haven't tested fully).

4) Their online support sucks. Every inquiry has resulted in email telling me to call their sales department, which is pretty much useless. I have contacted a support rep by phone and she was helpful but not past basic configuration.

I am still hopeful for this device, I think with proper monitoring of file names I might still be able to use it. Network setup was a snap, all of my systems on my network easily found the device and mapped a drive to it. I have set up the FTP features but have not yet used them. Also they seem to be producing firmware upgrades fairly fast so hopefully they will continue to fix these problems in the near future. Also a lot of people reported having problems with the ext3 file system. In the latest firmware they removed this option.

Good luck.
