Product Description

RangeMax 240 is an innovation in wireless technology, delivering wireless speeds of up to 240 Mbps - as fast as wired Ethernet. RangeMax 240 uses an advanced MIMO (Multi-In, Multi-Out) technology to transmit multiple streams of data in a single wireless channel. That means, for the first time ever, you can enjoy wired speeds with wireless freedom. You don't need cables to conveniently stream MP3s or High Definition quality video, play online games, access networked storage, use Internet telephony, or just surf the web anywhere in your home. RangeMax 240 Wireless Adapters are optimized for use with the RangeMax 240 Wireless Router, so that everyone enjoys ultimate speed and coverage everywhere in your house - with virtually no dropouts or dead spots. With RangeMax 240, wireless is finally as fast as wired.Using multiple streams of data that dynamically adapt to interference, RangeMax 240 Wireless technology boosts your network coverage area by up to ten times that of standard wireless routers. It also maintains connection speeds up to fourteen times faster than a legacy wireless g router at the edge of its range. With NETGEAR's exclusive Touchless WiFi Security, you can rest assured that what happens on your network stays on your network. Touchless WiFi Security automatically detects the type of security settings of your network, whether it's a NETGEAR router or even another brand, and connects you with a simple passphrase. RangeMax 240's powerful safeguard against unauthorized network access includes WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy), WPA-PSK, and WPA2-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access - Pre-Shared Key). NETGEAR's SmartWizard also makes installation simple - you'll be up and running in minutes.

1 out of 5 stars Orphaned.......2007-05-07

This adapter (WPNT121) has good range and great speed when mated to its companion, the WPNT834 wireless router, but Netgear has COMPLETELY AND DISGRACEFULLY abandoned support for these products -- less than one and a half years from their initial announcements. As the Netgear website tartly puts it "WPNT834 has been discontinued, no updates planned", and "WPNT121 has been discontinued, no updates planned".

What this means in particular is that there is no compatibilty update for Windows Vista. You can get it to work with Vista (but not - so far as I can tell - using WAP) only unsecured or using WEP; which, given that WEP can be broken in under a minute, might as well be unsecured.

The original press release for these products was dated November 7, 2005. I don't know the exact date that they were "discontinued", but they were already discontinued by January 2007 - 14 months later. Yet, the channel continues to have "new" stock in it. You can buy it new right here on Amazon today (5/6/2007).

Netgear should correct this situation immediately, there is no excuse for abandoning customers this quickly. And, by the way, since when did discontinuing a product mean that you no longer support it -- especially in the case of mass breakage beyond the customer's control.

What's especially galling is that it was certainly not a secret that Vista was coming in November 2005. The product should have been shipped with the expectation of providing Vista support.

5 out of 5 stars A must for the Rangemax 240 router........2006-11-05

I ended up with the Rangemax 240 router and this product (Rangemax 240 USB Adapter) This adapter is directional so aim it towards the router for better performance. The performance I get is between 140 - 240 MBps, at 35 feet and three walls. Dont use the CD to install the driver. Goto the Netgear site and get the latest driver to install. [...]

Also from Netgears website: If your computer does not have a USB 2.0 port but rather a USB 1.1 type port, the 121 will be limited to the maximum speed of the USB 1.1 port. USB 1.1 port maximum speed is 14 Mbps whereas the maximum speed of a USB 2.0 port is 480 Mbps. PC computers can be upgraded with optional add-on USB 2.0 adapters that provide one or more USB 2.0 ports.

Good Luck. Awesome product to me.
