2 out of 5 stars Active Directory support is worse than beta.......2006-12-02

The Buffalo Terastation Pro advertises support for Active Directory. Unfortunately, it seems the Buffalo Tech rushed the product to market before the engineering people could get AD support stable. So, Active Directory support is 90% broken.

First, I received my 1.0TB terastation in August 2006. The device arrived without any AD support at all. I had to download and install firmware that supported AD. This was the first sign that something is wrong. Buffalo had released a product to manufacturing that didn't include its most valuable feature.

Scond, you need to enter Domain Admin credentials to get the Terastation to connect to a Windows AD. This is normal. However, if the unit is power cycled, then you must delete it from the console on your domain controller, and join it to the AD again with administrator credentials. The unit should cache non-admin credentials, but it doesn't. This is a security problem, since the device always carries around admin credentials. It is also a usability problem, since any time it's rebooted AD must be disabled and reenabled over and over again.

Third, in a large AD environment (more than 999 user/group objects), the unit crashes when retrieving the list of user/group objects for the purpose of organizing permissions. This is not just a limit on the number of objects in a domain, but in a whole forest. This makes the AD support totally useless for an environment at any mid or large-business. If you have more than 1000 things in your AD forest, then AD has no chance of working at all.

This NAS box works ok for home use, but be very cautious about buying it for its AD support.

2 out of 5 stars Good Network Drive - Terrible Quality & Service.......2006-05-14

I contacted tech support 13 times and had to wait one hour or longer each time. Four times I left a message to be called back within their claimed 1 hr, but they only called back twice and once was 2 days later. They then argued their average wait time was only 20 min!

The drives seem to work fine once up and running. This took a few calls and about one week until tech support realized I needed to fix the IP address of my Terastation for it to work for longer than 30 min.

I had to send the first unit back due to bad USB controllers - the Terastation quit recognizing my USB drives. I now have a problem where the Terastation treats both attached 300 GB USB drives as the same drive. This unit may also need to be returned.

I have spent over 20 hrs trying to get these to work and am still not done. I would buy a LaCie or just a Buffalo Linkstation with a large backup USB drive as their Linkstations do not seem to have the same problems.

By the way, any attached USB hard drive cannot be read by your computer as it is formatted in XFS format.
