Amazon.com Product Description
Securely extend your broadband Internet connection to all your computers with the Netgear RP614NA Web Safe Router gateway. Each user can instantly benefit from high-speed Web access, file sharing, video streaming, head-to-head Internet gameplay, and MP3 downloading. This 4-port Internet gateway provides state-of-the-art filtering and controls that allow parents to limit URL access and monitor Internet activities, while firewall protection secures your computers and network against hackers. Setup couldn't be easier--the Smart Setup wizard automatically detects your Internet connection type and the animated Installation Assistant and onscreen help guide you through each step. The Web Safe Router is sleekly designed and is compatible with all Ethernet cable and DSL modems and with all Internet service providers.
With the Web Safe Router you can enjoy ultrafast Web surfing from the start. Share your broadband Internet connection, files, and printers with up to 253 computers. It works with Windows, Macintosh, or even Linux computers. Instantly distribute MP3s, digital movies, and photos. Port-forwarding controls make it simple to communicate using multimedia applications (such as NetMeeting), host Web services, and play Internet games.
Establish content filtering by Web address, keyword, or by time-of-day usage limits for your children. You can also choose to receive e-mailed reports of browsing activities and optional real-time e-mail alerts. A NAT (Network Address Translation) firewall with VPN (virtual private network) pass-through protects against Internet attacks, but allows you secure access. Auto partitioning on each port protects each computer from damaged network connections. A free, one-year subscription to Freedom security and privacy software blocks ads and prevents personal information from being sent over the Internet (for up to eight Windows-based computers).
Four ultrafast 10/100 Mbps LAN ports automatically detect computer speed to optimize network performance (up to 200 Mbps with full duplex) at a distance of 100 meters (328 feet). With double the memory and a 50 percent faster CPU than many popular routers, the Web Safe Router gateway is well-equipped to distribute large-file multimedia presentations in no time.
Even without networking experience, this gateway is easy for anyone to set up and use. The Smart Setup wizard automatically detects your Internet connection type and the animated Install Assistant guides you through each step. Status lights make it easy to observe network activity. A space-saving vertical stand and a free network cable are included.
The Netgear RP614NA comes with a three-year limited warranty.
Customer Reviews:
It's 50% great and 50% a pain.......2007-05-10
The rounter works very well; and worth the cost.
But, to be able to use it be prepared to spend lots of time on the phone to India getting it working. The customer service people were very helpful, but I was on the phone two times over an hour each time.
Sometimes, sometimes not, then not at all.......2007-04-23
So here's the thing, when I lived in Phoenix, and I had this certain cable internet provider, and it worked. Granted I had a bit of trouble getting it to work right off the bat. But, then it worked, and that was that.
Then I move to Albuquerque, and this other cable internet provider, and I could not get it to work. I even called Netgear, and even though the guy on the line was very nice, and very helpful, it still wouldn't work!
I finally went down to the store, and got myself a new router by a different manufacturer, and that one worked. <shrug>
very nice hardware, but.......2007-04-12
I bought this to replace another maker's wired router that simply didn't work. I have a mixed Mac / Win network. The size of the unit was much smaller, and the design much cleaner than the other router; I was very pleased with this. The trouble came when I tried to do a manual installation from the main Mac computer. It simply didn't work. So I used the Windows-only installation CD on a desktop running Win 2K, but the process would not complete. Finally, I used a laptop running Win XP and installation finally completed. The process took an entire morning. But there aren't really any other wired DSL routers for a Mac/Windows network, so I didn't have much choice but to endure the process. Now that it's up and running, it was worth the trouble. The claim that several computers can use the router without throughput being negatively affected seems to be true.
so far so good!.......2007-04-11
I ordered this product used a few weeks ago. It literally took me seconds to hook up my computers! It works great too... up until now the biggest problem we've had is that someone accidentally unplugged it and we couldn't figure out why we went offline all of a sudden! This product more than met my expectations and was a great buy for $20!
Version 4 is a big improvement.......2007-02-22
The latest version of this router, version 4, is quite an improvement over previous editions. The case is more heavy and solid, and less flimsy, while the design is a little more compact.
The web interface also added an easy-to-read progress bar when making big changes like firmware upgrades, as well as a nice tutorial for first-time users.
The earlier editions did the job well, but I think this latest version of the router is more polished and professional. Pick this router up if you're doing a small home or small office network. It's a good investment.
