Product Description
The Linksys Wireless-G Travel Router with SpeedBooster lets you carry a wireless network wherever you go. There's a built-in access point, which lets you connect SpeedBooster-enhanced and regular Wireless-G and Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also an Ethernet port to connect your wired PC. The Router function ties it together and lets your PCs share a wired or wireless Internet connection.
The travel-friendly form factor includes a built-in power supply and antenna -- it even comes with a travel case! Create a temporary, personal, wireless access "bubble" in your hotel room. Just plug the Router directly into the wall, and connect the hotel's fast Internet service cable. Then use the Router's push button setup feature to easily connect and configure your wireless devices -- push the button on the Router and on your other SecureEasySetup-enabled wireless device to automatically create an encryption-secured wireless connection. You can also create a shared-access bubble attached to a wireless Internet connection to use multiple devices on a single hotspot account in a coffee shop or airport lounge
To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G Broadband Router can encode all wireless transmissions with WEP or extra-strength WPA Personal encryption. The Router can serve as a DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, and supports VPN pass-through. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.
The Linksys Wireless-G Travel Router with SpeedBooster lets you bring the convenience of wireless networking everywhere you go.
Customer Reviews:
The worst router I have ever owned.......2007-05-30
I have considerable experience with routers, having owned many different brands and models over the years, and having configured routers for friends and family as well. Being the worst router of all time is an "honor," and honestly I have experienced a number of bad ones, but this is far and away the WORST.
The first one I received never could maintain a signal for more than a few minutes, and rejected connections from most but not all of my laptops (I have 5). I finally called Linksys and spent an "enjoyable" 4 or 5 hours on the phone with their tech support and customer service who knew no more about the product than I did. They finally arranged an RMA, and about 2 weeks after they received the defective one, I received a REFURB., i.e. someone else's broken unit they claimed to have refurbished. The replacement unit broadcast a signal for all of 5 minutes and then never did again.
I then wasted another hour on the telephone merry-go-round with Linksys, with several "enjoyable" long distance telephone calls to the Philippines, including 2 to customer service and 1 to tech support. The tech support person apparently made no record of the call. The second customer service person told me they were going to replace the unit but I would have to start over, calling tech support again.
I ended the call this way: "listen carefully, please, because the sound you are going to hear is the sound of this piece of junk falling into my garbage can." I then put the phone at the top of my kitchen garbage can and dropped the router in, then thanked the customer service person for her time, and said goodbye.
This product is ill-conceived, supplies unneeded functionality (if it worked in the first place) and is a total piece of junk.
If you are looking for aggravation, this would be a nice purchase, but otherwise I suggest you buy something else.
2 stars equal too difficult.......2007-05-25
The limitation of not being able to connect to a secured wireless signal was the most disappointing feature. Otherwise it was just too difficult to set up. I travel a great deal and at my first stop on my latest trip I was unable to get it to work. I don't have time to play around with settings all the time. It should work as soon as I plug it in and turn on my computer. There are other travel routers around that do this, why can't linksys. The only nice quality was size.
Travel Router.......2007-05-07
This works extremely well in hotels with high-speed internet access. Very straightforward and simple to use. One caution, though: do change the default password, as anyone else in the hotel can access your router too (and change the password -- happened to me). Other than that, you can connect 2 computers and pay for only 1 connection, and use all your computer anywhere in the room. Linksys tech support is also one of the best.
Disappointed..........2007-01-27
Bought this item a little over a year now. I held off on writing a review regarding this product until it got a little use...
At first it worked great and proved to be very convenient in it's form-factor and functionality. The signal strength was excellent. It also provided WEP encryption for a secure network. Unfortunately, around 6 months of uninterrupted continual use, it suddenly stopped working.
Linksys offers a 1 year's guarantee on this product. Knowing this, I called Linksys and went through all of their troubleshooting steps. I followed the steps precisely, and finally the tech-support deemed the router faulty. B/c it was faulty, they let me return it on the warranty.
BTW, if you have to return it on the warranty, be sure to keep the shipping paper that Amazon gives you stating the purchase of this item... for warranty purposes (helpful tip).
I sent the item back on Dec. 24th, 2006 and am still waiting for them to receive it! It is now Jan. 26th, 2007 and not one acknowledgment of receipt. So, that is why I am reviewing this item, and mentioning my disgust. I will provide an update to this review if I get a working travel router back, but until then I will not recommend the travel router to anyone.
Just What I Needed!.......2007-01-12
This router works flawlessly for what I need. I have used it with a wired WAN connection and a wireless one (contrary to another review which claimed this feature did not work), although I did not try it on a secured (WEP/WPA) wireless access point.
I used the wired LAN connection to connect to my VOIP box (which I then hooked up to a two-line wireless phone) and so was able to easily take both home-office phone numbers on the road. Then, with the notebook talking wirelessly (and securely), it was very nice to work (and answer the phone) sitting by the hotel pool! I think my clients were a little jealous, though ;-)
It is very compact and very easy to set up.
