The card automatically recognizes and optimizes the bandwidth for the devices connected, running at either Hi-speed USB 2.0 (480Mb/s), full-speed USB 1.1 (12Mb/s) or low-speed (1.5Mb/s).

whether you need more USB ports but don't want to add another power cord (from a hub) to your already full surge protector or perhaps have an older motherboard with only USB 1.1 (or even no) ports you can't go wrong with this card. Also works right out of the box with every Linux distro I've thrown at including Mepis, Linspire, Ubuntu, Suse, and Xandros.
