Product Description

Get the blazing speed of Gigabit Ethernet with the D-Link GigaExpress DGS-1005D, a 5-port 10/100/1000Mbps Gigabit Switch that delivers power, performance, and reliability in one cost-effective, space-saving design. Increase the speed of your network server and backbone connections, or make Gigabit to the desktop a reality. Power users in the home, office, workgroup, or creative production environment can now move large, bandwidth-intensive files faster. Transfer graphics, CGI, CAD, or multimedia files across the network instantly. The D-Link DGS-1005D 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Switch features a non-blocking switching architecture that filters and forwards packets at full wire-speed for maximum throughput. An 8, 000 MAC address table provides scalability for even the largest networks. Address learning and aging, 802.3x Flow Control for full duplex mode, and back pressure flow control for half-duplex mode alleviates traffic congestion and ensures reliable data transmission. Designed using industry standards, it is compatible with virtually all 10, 100, and 1000Mbps Ethernet devices and other vendor equipment. The D-Link DGS-1005D 10/100/1000 Mbps Gigabit Switch protects your existing network investments while providing you with a straightforward migration path to faster Gigabit speeds. The auto features of this gigabit switch make installation plug and play and hassle-free. No configuring is required. Auto MDI/MDI-X crossover on all ports eliminate the need for crossover cables or uplink ports. Auto-negotiation on each port senses the link speed of a network device (either 10, 100, or 1000 Mbps) and intelligently adjusts for compatibility and optimal performance. It also features diagnostic LEDs which display status and activity, allowing you to quickly detect and correct problems on the network.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Worked very well for me.......2006-09-28

I'm not really a network guru, but I just plugged it into my local network and it worked great. Now I have all my mac's running at gigabit speeds to do distributed builds.

1 out of 5 stars Total garbage !!!.......2006-07-19

For years I used, trusted and loved D-Link products. These days I find D-Link is basically shoving the cheapest junk hardware components into shiny new plastic covers, relabelling them and releasing it as a 'new' line of product.

I really cannot believe I am going to say this but either read and re-read D-Link product reviews or steer clear of D-Link networking products all together. They used to be great. Over the past 3-4 years I have personally witnessed and experience a serious decline in quality of product. DO NOT USE D-LINK for BUSINESS!!! It just cannot handle that environment period!!!

Like most of my old D-Link products, this box runs hot! Also, it frequently locks up. I RMA'd it. 3 months later I still had the same problems. I bought a nice, $30 5 port Gigabit switch by Netgear and it has never given me a single problem after 3 months of use.

I love D-Link for the low price tag...but I guess you really do get what you pay for. Spend an extra bit of cash for important things like switches, routers and wifi points. You will be glad you did!

2 out of 5 stars Will not buy DLink again.......2006-04-27

Everything started off rosey with this switch until a port died 2 months after I got it. I RMA'd it and the replacement switch took so long to get here I bought a Negear GS-605 to hold me over.

Once the replacement finally got there, I attempted to hook it up to the other switched and it refused (tried both crossover and normal cables, ports, etc). Sure it would sync the link at 1Gb/s but it refused to actaully pass tcp/ip packets.

I double checked the manual (which conflicted with the online Knowledge Base) and still nothing. I then verfied the other switch would connect to some other switches I had lying around and it worked just fine. So the D-Link was most definately the culprit and only actually worked problem free for 2 months.

The netgear is working great and I am picking up another one today to replace this shoddy D-Link product.

2 out of 5 stars Flawed.......2005-12-27

I have a mixed home network with 3 100bt connections and two gigabit PCs. If I mix speeds, the D-Link resets itself every 10 seconds, making it unusable. I replaced it with a Netgear GS605 and have had no problems with that.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Fanless 5-Port 10/100/1000 Switch.......2005-09-16

I had been using the older 10/100 D-Link switch (DSS-5+) for over two years and never had any kind of problem. About three weeks ago, I wrote a review of that switch here and mentioned that I'd like to try the Gigabit version (this one). After thinking about it for a bit, and realizing how inexpensive these things are, I went out and bought it. Exactly as I said for the DSS-5+, this is a great little switch that's definitely worth the money. All the ports are in the back, the casing has a brushed aluminum look, and it's fanless. So, it's definitely possible to leave it sitting on the desk. Since the "switching fabric" supports 10Gb/sec, that means each of the five ports can carry their full 2Gb/sec (1Gb/sec each way) capacity without problem. The darn thing doesn't even get warm. Definitely a good buy (I rate it at 5 stars out of 5).

Darn near every computer sold these days has a Gigabit Ethernet connection built into it. So, assuming you have the proper cabling (Cat 5e or Cat 6), using a Gigabit switch should let you take advantage of the added speed on your local network. However, it won't make any difference across the Internet since only a rare few cable modem even connect at 100Mb/sec and, as far as I know, none connect at 1 GB/sec.
