Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Great, BUT keyboard USB ports are inactive.......2007-06-06

I have an old mac G4 desktop and a G4 mini mac sharing a kensington mouse, generic monitor and an Apple USB keyboard. I've been lucky that I haven't had any problems with switching or with either unit awakening from sleep. I was annoyed to discover I couldn't use the keyboard's USB ports for my printer, and saw that this problem was mentioned in other reviews.

I was even more annoyed when I called tech support (at least it's free, 24-7) to confirm that the KVM killing the keyboard ports is a known issue, and the guy asked me stuff like "Is your power cord plugged in" and "check your connections." After arguing for 5 minutes about where I plugged in the printer, he finally understood what I had asked at the BEGINNING of the call. His response was that the KVM emulates the keyboard and won't carry the USB connection, and that I should plug the printer in directly into the computer.

Besides losing 10 minutes of my life in a stupid conversation, I was angry that Iogear knows this is an issue and makes no mention of it. I can set up an extra USB hub pretty easily, but fortunately I don't ask for extra functionality from my keyboard or mouse.

Overall, this product works just fine, but be careful if you need more from your mouse and keyboard.

Iogear 2 Port Compact USB KVM Switch (GCS632U)

The unit has been working flawlessly for me since I hooked it up several weeks ago. I'm pretty happy with the product, the only minor complaint I have is with the graphics on my 2nd machine. It doesn't seem to be as clear as my first machine. When I look at the lcds on the laptops, they are crystal clear but hooked up through the kvm switch, the first machine graphics are very clear but the 2nd machine, though not blurry, just are not as crisp. I don't know if it's the kvm switch or the output port on the laptop that has the issue but it's not major. I'd recommend this product highly to anyone looking for a 2-port kvm switch.

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Pleased.......2007-05-28

As I began setting up my multi-PC system (need to connect to two different networks and the two may not communicate) I heard horror stories from people who had problems with their KVM switches. This Iogear switch installed without any trouble and has worked well for the last month. Additionally, its very small footprint makes it easy to keep out of the way (mine is velcroed to the bottom of my desk). I heartily recommend it.

1 out of 5 stars Iogear fails.......2007-05-25

THIS SWITCH IS NOT GUARANTEED TO WORK WITH ALL KEYBOARDS. I wish they had made this clear to me when I purchased this switch on sale, I could have saved my money. I have a "multifunction" (pause, play, volume etc.) Microsoft keyboard; several times a day the keyboard stops taking input, and I have to unplug the switch from both computers to let it reset. This keyboard works fine by itself when plugged into a usb port on any of my computers. I called their tech support, after 20 minutes of fumbling with the product number, my name, email address; I finally was able to talk to the operator about their mis-documented hardware. The operator happily observed that it is difficult to test all keyboards, and that there are several multifunction keyboards that it does not work with. This didn't solve my problem, so she promised that tech support would call back in 24 hours. They did not call back. Fantastic; based on that one conversation, it appears that in order to use this switch, I will need to buy another keyboard, which defeats the purpose of buying it in the first place. This is my first experience with iogear, and it certainly will be my last.

2 out of 5 stars Kept giving me issues with my mouse; gave up using it........2007-05-25

I purchased this KVM as a cost effective solution for switching between my Windows PC and Mac mini. It worked great for about a week, but then it started giving me problems recognizing my USB mouse. The mouse would work great if plugged directly into either computer, but would not function when plugged into the KVM. I gave up and just used two mice and the KVM for everything else.

I eventually gave things another try a few months later and once again it worked for about a week. Then, my USB keyboard started having issues. Now, I did try both the USB ports to make sure this was not an issue with the KVM USB ports. The problem followed the device, not the port.

Now this KVM just sits in a box and collects dust. I have two separate computers with two keyboards, mice, and monitors. I would not recommend the purchase of this device. I gave it two stars because when it did work, it worked great. I refused to purchase a new keyboard and mouse given that they work fine directly attached to any computer, but who knows if that may fix my issue.
