Product Description
The Linksys 10/100 8-Port VPN Router is an advanced Internet-sharing network solution for your small business needs. Like any router, it lets multiple computers in your office share an Internet connection. But the unique dual Internet ports on the 10/100 8-Port VPN Router let you connect a second Internet line as a backup to insure that you're never disconnected. Or, use both Internet ports at the same time, and let the router balance your office's requirements between them for maximum bandwidth efficiency. The 10/100 8-Port VPN Router also features a built-in 8-port full-duplex 10/100 Ethernet switch to connect eight PCs directly, or you can connect more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. The Virtual Private Network (VPN) capability creates encrypted "tunnels" through the Internet, allowing up to 50 remote offices or traveling users to securely connect into your office network from off-site. Users connecting through a VPN tunnel are attached to your company's network - with secure access to files, e-mail, and your intranet - just as if they were in the building. You can also use the VPN capability to allow users on your small office network to securely connect out to a corporate network. The 10/100 8-Port VPN Router can serve as a DHCP Server, and has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks. It can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet, and has IP address filtering so you can specify exactly who has access to your network. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. As the heart of your small office network, the connection-redundant Linksys 10/100 8-Port VPN Router gives you the connection reliability your business needs.
Customer Reviews:
QuickVPN doesn't work.......2007-03-08
I bought this router to replace my Netgeart FVS318 that was fried when we got hit by lightning. The VPN utility that came with that was too hard for the average user to configure, so the Linksys and QuickVPN utility looked good. Unfortunately the QuickVPN doesn't work, and spent quit a lot of time with Linksys tech support and still no luck. So if you're looking at this for the ease of VPN with QuickVPN, you may want to consider something else.
Not for the Amature.......2007-01-05
Overall the router is relatively fast. The VPN options are plentifull, but beware if you are not experienced with VPN you will have to put some time into learning and configuring VPN. For remote connectivity simplicity, you can use the quick VPN client, but that requires software installed on the remote client. I also liked the unit because it has a backup port that can be used in case your primary broadband connection fails or you can load balance between the two WAN ports. With that said, I am a home user and really don't have a need for the backup /load balancing functionality, but I'm a sucker for technology.
Works well as a Dual WAN router.......2006-01-22
I originally purchased a Xincom 503 Dual WAN router and wasted many many hours with its firmnware and configuration bugs - it never worked well. Eventually (months later) I gave up on waiting for Xincom bugs to be fixed and purchased this LinkSys RV082. Setup was simple and straight forward and it worked reliably since day 1. It came with the latest firmware loaded.
I'm using this router to load balance my cable and DSL broadband connections. I haven't tried and am unlikely to need the VPN features of the RV082. I do use it to host various mail and web servers and the port forwarding features and 1-to-1 maps of static WAN IP's to local IP's work very well.
I wish the DMZ was shared with a LAN port rather than the second WAN (you can't have both at once, so the choice is single WAN + DMZ or DUAL WAN and no DMZ).
The unit has a quality look and feel which is also reflected in its solid performance. Recommended without hesitation.
Update Oct 2006:
The router fault light came on after months of reliable operation and the unit would no longer work. Linksys did a cross-shipment with a brand new replacement (since it was within the warranty period).
I remain very happy with the router and would definately buy again despite needing a replacement. LinkSys cross-shipment worked well and the replacement arrived in about two ot three days.
An IMPORTANT tip.......2006-01-08
Okay, this will be brief and is being posted only as helpful hint rather than an indepth review.
If your speeds are fine when directly connected to your ISP, but are slow or unstable when running through the RV082 try the following:
Under the firewall tab, there is an MTU setting. You MUST take this off of Auto and use the manual setting. In my case the default manual setting of 1500 is what I needed. This solved the incredible slowdown problems I was having - in fact now I have the best speeds I have ever seen on my network.
Thanks to "Lone Stranger" and the Google search in which I found his post for finally providing me with this answer after hours of frustration. No thanks to linksys email support, who was of no use at all.
Very unstable.......2005-11-12
I have had this router and the RV016 for well over a year now and have had nothing but trouble. Each firmware version fixes old bugs and adds new ones. I have spent countless hours with their technical support team with NO luck.
read the other reviews from real users who have used this product before spending a penny. Not the reviews by magazines who only rate it on features (which I agree are very nice and got me to buy it) or from Linksys employees who post on amazon.
I upgraded this from a linksys vp41 - why I now question. that is a very low cost VPN router that actually works. Whatever you do - do not waste your time with this product. I wish I had not.
