Amazon.com Product Description

The Linksys EtherFast 10/100 PrintServer is the easiest way to add one printer to your 10BaseT or 100BaseTX network. Whether you're building a Fast Ethernet network now or later, the PrintServer automatically adjusts itself to either 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps speeds. It's a stand-alone unit, so it doesn't require a dedicated print server PC.

Equipped with Direct Memory Access (DMA) technology, a 128 KB buffer, and automatic collision control, the PrintServer can handle even the most complicated print jobs up to 50 percent faster than regular print servers. Fully compatible with regular laser, Bubble Jet, ink-jet, and dot matrix printers, the PrintServer also supports the latest bidirectional printers from HP, IBM, and other manufacturers, allowing you to keep track of a print job's status from anywhere on the network. With built-in multiprotocol support for 32-bit network operating systems, the PrintServer comes with an easy-to-use software management suite. Give your entire network flexible access to your printers.

4 out of 5 stars It was up and running in 15 minutes.......2007-03-06

My client's print server on his copier died. Parallel port was the only option so I picked up the PPSX1. I had it installed in 15 minutes including testing three PC's. It printed fast and they were happy. I used the existing LPR setup that the dead print server was using and everything went smoothly. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that the admin install gave an error on a DLL which I ignored. It worked however and I was able to set the IP address. The only other complaint was I wasn't able to spend more time there for billing purposes. :-)

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but a little pricey.......2006-04-05

This server is very nice. I thought i was going to have difficulty because of all the problems that i've heard from other sites, but to my surprise, it wasn't too bad.

I didn't use Linksys's stupid software to set this up becuase i didn't want to have to install 20 computers with software that would just slow them down. I connected directly to the router using one computer, set everything up on the print server via the web interface, then took the server to the printer it was to be hooked up to, plugged it in, and WHAM!!! it worked. It's been plugged in for about 4-5 months consecutively with about 1 power cycle per month and no problems yet... **Knock on wood**

Just for everyone's information... if you use LPR printing in windows, you don't have to use Linksys's software. :) makes everything A LOT easier, in my opinion anyways.

It works great with a Mac too on the same network!

5 out of 5 stars No fuss, no muss setup and works great........2006-03-19

I purchased this for use in a client's small home network to share their printer; Laptop running wireless downstairs, Desktop hardwired upstairs. Every thing was a peice of cake and works like a charm. Everyone is happy, especially me - the paid geek.

3 out of 5 stars Half-arsed product.......2006-02-01

As a fan of Linksys network devices, I'm very disappointed in this one. For starters, figuring out how to configure the unit to do CUPS-like printing was very difficult - it took googling to figure out the exact path to the printer, because the documentation I got was outdated. While the server allows disabling older printing protocols like NetBEUI and AppleTalk, it will not disable NetBIOS and the ilk. As a result, it generates more traffic than necessary (every 2 seconds), polluting the network. Finally, the decent web-driven configuration interface that Linksys is known for has been replaced with something quickly thrown together, so that while you can set a password to protect the unit, anyone on the LAN can modify the settings.

This unit is a sub-par product, at best. Disappointing, because I'm used to better devices from Linksys.
