Not what I wanted........2007-05-12

This router didn't have any wired ports on the back for wired clients to connect to. The WPN-824 did have those ports. I promptly returned it and bought the WPN-824. You may wonder how anyone could buy the wrong rounter, with the wrong features, and the answer is that the information on whether or not it had wired eithernet ports was not present, so I could not determine if the wpn-824 was the same as the wpn-802. Please buy wisely.

Nice Access Point - Good Range.......2007-05-04

This access point has incredible range. Very susceptible to heat however. Do not place on top of Telco's router (modem slang).

The product performs exactly as outlined in their brochure. However installation is not an easy matter and the written instructions are not adequate. But the outstanding free telephone help from Netgear's customer support center in Phillipines was GREAT..! It took several telephone calls, but Heidi at Netgear saved the day...!

I bought this product for its amazing range and 802.11G security, I was willing to give up some speed (as there are faster WAP's) for security and range. What I got when my first unit arrived was a product that upon arrival worked but I could not configure it to use any security at all either 11b or 11g via the UI they provide. Thus great wireless and no security. I went through the rather laborious RMA process that Netgear has and at the end of the process I had a brand new WAP that worked as advertised and I was happy. In fact I was thrilled about the entire turn around process. I asked the technician who did my RMA if this was a common occurance - sadly he did not say No. I was a bit nervous about what my replacement unit would be like. And well justified to be nervous. So now just 8 months after my second unit was put on my home network, the same thing has happened so again I have a great WAP with great signal strength and NO security. So again I am on the phone with Netgear and this time my unit is not within the 90 day purchase window so they are telling me I have a software problem (and if I was not already on an RMA unit) I bet I would hear the words "you are past warrarty." So my advice would be that if you buy this product please by an extended service plan for this and hope they have figured out why the admin console is so delicate. I have owned 3 other Netgear Firewalls/Routers and never had this problem with any other admin management UI - so I think whatever the problem ends up being that it is unique to this model or series. Other than that it still has great range - just ask my neighbors - and don't do online banking from your laptop. I want another unit at this point and now I am at the point where I see how good the Netgear/Amazon relationship is. The only reason I have given 3 stars is the range and the first RMA experience by Netgear (as their online technicians are not that technical) but if they give me grief about this second unit I would be giving it a 2 or one star !

Wireless connection that works.......2007-01-15

Netgear's WPN802 may not be necessary for everyone but it really works for me. Our Internet connection is through Direcway/Hughes satellite and a router won't work with it. A hub/switch and a wireless access point is required instead. Setup for the WPN802 was fairly straight forward using the enclosed paper Installation Guide. Configuring the desktop computer to communicate with the WPN802's IP address was all that was really necessary. After that the WPN802 was connected to the hub/switch and we were ready to go wireless.
Netgear also provides a thorough manual on disk that provides additional information for more complicated setups. Overall I'm satisfied. The current $20 rebate also helps.
