MacAlly Firewire enclosure.......2006-11-06

On two separate occasions I've purchased the PHR-100AF enclosure. Both times the results exceeded my hopes. They are easy to put into service--the hard disk mounting is a snap and all hardware is provided. They are thermally satisfactory without an internal fan, they look good, and the activity light is very visible.

These enclosures have served me well.

I bought a couple of these Macally PHR-100AF FireWire 400 enclosures after the IDE connector on my motherboard went bad. I am able to boot my Mac from this external drive which has extended the life of my machine.

Pros:
* Case is constructed of aluminum - strong and good heat dissipation
* Quiet - hard disk drive rides on rubber mountings (included) inside the enclosure - resulting in *very* quiet operation
* Power on/off switch on back of case allows you to save electricity (and hdd life)
* Two FireWire ports allow daisy-chaining of multiple drives (I use two of these drives to plug into one FireWire port on my computer)
* Fast connection - My computer is now booting from a hard drive that resides in this external enclosure with no noticable reduction in speed
* FireWire cable included in packaging - thoughtful
* Rubber rails running along the top and bottom of the enclosure add to sound/vibration reduction
* Super-easy drive installation - instruction manual has clear photo images

Cons
* Giant blue/red drive activity indicator on front of enclosure is on constantly - distracting (minus one star)
* Huge - alone it is ok, but when combined with the power brick, the combined size is huge
* Requires a AC power brick (included)

Would I buy another?

We bought two of these cases to make use of drives from an unused server. The cases made it easy to install the drives, are quiet due to the external power supply, have a neat and useful indicator light on the front, and they have a power switch as well. We plan to buy more as the need arises.

Easy to install-good value........2006-08-29

The enclosure has a very clean finish with good workmanship. Easy to install and get going. The light is a little too bright and can be a big distraction if directly visible.

Note: this unit is Firewire ONLY and does NOT have USB.

Almost the Best Solution..............2006-06-12

After repeated problems with another brand of Firewire external enclosure, we purchased (3) three of the Macally PHR-100AF enclosures for (2) two each 200GB and (1) one each 30GB Seagate hard drives. They all installed very easily / plugged them in and each was recognized immediately. But we found that even though Windows XP Pro "says" it will handle Firewire drives daisy-chained together, we HAD to purchase a Firewire Hub in order to ensure that these (3) drives would be continually recognized by Windows XP Pro. Without the hub, Windows would "disconnect" a random drive (who knows why) every once in a while. Since installing the Firewire Hub not a single problem.

These Macally PHR-100AF enclosures are cool looking and COOL overall. We now have over a terabyte of storage on our main system.
