Finally a good video converter.......2007-04-07

I had tried several USB devices to capture old VHS and 8mm tape on a well equipped Windows box but would either have things work poorly or not at all. That was a big driving force to my switch from Windows to MAC. I initially tried one of my cheap USB devices on the MAC and it did not work. Bought the Canopus and it works flawlessly! There are lots of cheaper converters out there, but as always, you get what you pay for.

Mac, PAL, and Canopus.......2007-02-14

Bought this to convert PAL Hi-8 (Canon) purchased years ago in Singapore for Mac (PowerBook G4, Tiger OS-X) nonlinear editing. Worked perfectly the first time, only needed to set a single switch to select PAL. No need for software drivers etc. Happily plugged and played with the Mac and the camcorder.

Acceptable price for the features and ease of use.

I have to admit, thus far I have only used the converter one time. It worked exactly as it was designed. Plug and play. I hooked up the out ports from the VCR into the in ports on the converter and then the firewire between the converter and my laptop (Mac PowerBook). The movie was converted from analog to digital and captured by iMovie. From iMovie I converted it to a Quicktime movie, which I needed for that particular project. From what I understand the quality of the VCR and the original analog video will determine the quality of the final digital product. I look forward to converting aditional movies!

I have used other capture devices for analog capture, and have always had problems with frames dropping ect. Not anymore after purchasing Canopus ADVC110 converter. It does an excellent job. The 1394 cord is a little short however, so you may want to provide your own longer one.

I got it to archive DVR'd material. Next I'm gonna try and use it to get all my audio cassettes and LP's into my MP3 library. It works like it should. Directions are a bit confusing, mostly because of the British terminology. But it could be a bit simpler. The dip switches and their settings leave a bit to be desired. More plug n play would be better. Again tho, not a bad product for the price.
