Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Does the job, but..........2007-06-08

I upgraded to the 301p+ from my dead 101p+ and at first could not get it to work at all. I exchanged it (Amazon was GREAT, having mailed me a new one immediately without waiting for the return) and discovered I had the same problem with the replacement! I tried a Linksys substitute from Circuit City and finally got the idea that something was wrong here. To make a long story short, the problem is in the design of the body of the 303p+: it's thicker on one side than the other and on my Canon PIXMA iP4000 that thick part has to face the printer's body and there's not really enough room. I finally discovered I had to insert the server and then pull it hard toward the printer body so the contacts would make connection. Then it worked! I'm considering cutting some of the printer body away (if possible) to provide easier access. I had ordered through Amazon an APC 0010-6 Centronics male/female extension cable, but a 0100, a standard parallel printer cable, was sent instead. I'm still wondering about that order.

4 out of 5 stars D-Link Print Server.......2007-06-01

I purchesed a Dell E520. The Dell has no LPT1 port. I own a Canon BJ200e that needs a LPT1 port. The D-Link DP-301P+ print server works very will and solved the problem of no LPT1 port. The only down side is the instructions are a bit hard to understand if you are not a full out computer geek. However, I got though it and it works will.

4 out of 5 stars Good product and works well........2007-05-22

Setup was a bit finicky, however I'm using a printer not on their compatibility list (HP Deskjet 832C.) Took a bit of trying different things but I got it to work. Instead of printing with LPR over TCP/IP, I'm using RAW over TCP/IP. Works just fine on my Windows 2000 laptop and my OpenSuse 10.2 laptop. Changing the IP address to one on my network subnet and shutting off it's static IP feature was no problem. No clearance issues either, fits just fine on the back of my printer. All in all, a pretty good product.

3 out of 5 stars Works Nicely Once Set-up - But Not Easy to Set Up.......2007-03-18

I almost gave this unit 4 stars, but in thinking about it, it's still new on my network (2 days and has not yet stood the test of time) and the installation was not very easy.

This is nice hardware, but set-up is not intuitive and you have to adapt and improvise. It helps to be tech savvy (as other reviewers have pointed out.)

My first tip is that if you're on a machine with XP, go with the PS Admin program first to do most of your initial set up there.

This windows app lets you talk right to the print server over your network without messing with or resetting your computer's IP (as they indicate in the quick set-up.) Using this app, you can immediately give the d-link an IP address in line with your own network and router. Then you can call it from a browser.

Adding it as a local printer, creating a TCP/IP port, etc, as the quick start indicated, never worked for me. Instead, after I gave it an IP in the PS Admin app, added it to my workgroup, and then was able to add it is a network printer connecting using the direct address of the \\printserver\printer\ - then installed printer's driver and we were off and printing.

It is really nice to share the printer without having to leave a computer on to share it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product for sharing a printer on a simple home network.......2006-12-02

I love the form factor. It simply plugs into the parallel port on the printer - no printer cable. It is a snap to set up if you just follow exactly the instructions in the Quick Installation Guide. I had it working with four computers, three Windows XP and one Ubuntu Linux, in less than an hour.
