Product Description
Netgear USB Mini Print Server PS121 - At home or office, several computers sharing a printer can be a frustrating experience. With Netgear PS121 multi-user access to your printer is now simpler than ever. NETGEAR's USB Mini Print Server does away with the hassles of sharing your printer among multiple PCs. Its easy external USB connection links one USB printer to as many as three PCs, so different network users can run multiple print jobs at the same time from anywhere on a home or office network. The attractive case design looks great in any environment, and its compact size allows you to place it close at hand or out of the way to open up your work area. Easy setup with NETGEAR's Smart Wizard Install Assistant saves you time and effort so you're up and running in minutes. Since no parallel printer cable is needed, it saves you money, too.
Customer Reviews:
Great compatibility, does not last a year.......2007-06-10
I've had two of these USB print servers in the last 18 months, and although they are compatible with a good range of printers, and relatively easy to set up, they die very quickly. The first time I had the print server it died after about 9 months of being always on (although rarely in use). I originally thought it was my printer, but later found it was the print server. I couldn't replace it, because I didn't have the receipt anymore, so I purchased a replacement, thinking it was just a one-time issue. Now, after another 8-9 months of being on 24/7, it has died again. But this time I saved my receipt and the box, so I can hopefully get a replacement from the company, since they have a 1 year warranty.
Works as it should but does not allow for advanced setups........2007-05-17
So far I have been pretty satisfied with the device. It worked out of the box and I did not have to do anything special to get my first computer to print to the network print server. The only issue I have is that the only way to get printing to work 100%, including print catridge status and whatnot, is to have every machine on the same network segment. For most home networks, this is not a big deal. But I have 2 network segments to separate my wireless from wired. So my wireless clients have to print by IP which does not allow me to see ink cartridge status and other printer management features. Other than that, it has been reliable so far and I have not had to reboot since first setup.
Don't buy this product.......2007-04-25
Every time I look at this overpriced piece of junk on my desk it makes me upset that I ever bought it.
To cut to the chase: sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When I was in the market for a print server I wanted something that would be reliable and always work; this product isn't it.
Simple and easy way to network a USB printer.......2007-03-30
I purchased this Netgear PS121NA USB Mini Print Server about two months ago to use with my new HP 460 series DeskJet inkjet printer. I had no problems installing this print server and using it with my HP 460 series printer. Just to see what happens, I tried to add this print server without using the Netgear CD by guessing a default web management page: nope, you'll need to use the installation CD but I did not encounter any problems. As the instructions say, you will need to use the install CD with each computer.
The CD software also installs a MFP Smart Printer Assistant so you can "reserve" a multi-function printer/FAX/scanner/copier device so others on the network can't send a job to that same device that can cause trouble if you're trying to say FAX a document from the MFP. Nice.
So far, so I've disconnected and reconnected the LAN cable between the printer and print server many times without having to reset or cycle the power to the print server. Well, just once but even then, just cycling the power got things working again. But that's because I was purposely playing with the power. If I leave the print server alone, I've not had any problems. That's nice.
It's a keeper.
Not a bad piece of equipment if you know what you are doing.........2007-03-06
I read all of the reviews and decided to give this a try anyway and had some of the same problems as others who reviewed this product (install issues, firewall issues etc). At first I kept getting install failures and couldnt figure out why until I remembered something that I read on the internet about the firewalls interfering with installation and as soon as I disabled my firewall the install went through without a problem. The only thing I had to figure out after that was how to reactivate my firewall and still be able to use the server. I have Zone Alarm and had to add an expert rule to the firewall to allow it to work. I would assume that it would be the same with other firewalls. To be fair, the Netgear website did say that you may have to disable the firewall but their instructions were very vague and their suggestion to use Windows firewall was pretty lame. Otherwise the server works exactly as advertised and I have had no problems with it. Overall it took me about 2 hours to get everything up and running.
