Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not recommended for simultaneous A/G usage.......2007-05-22

I've had this router for about 2 years, and am only now just starting to get it working reliably. I had the same issue reported by others with the router locking up after a few minutes (with all the status lights staying on). Customer service was not helpful. I upgraded the firmware, and finally figured out that if I disable the 802.11-a antenna (which i'm no longer using), the router lock-ups went away.

So, if you only need it to work with either an 802.11-a or g network, it'll probably work. However, I will not buy D-Link products anymore; they couldn't even figure this bug out, and they designed it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Media Center and Xbox 360.......2007-04-20

I wasn't pleased with my previous router's performance (D-Link DI-624 rev C), so I did some research and picked up a new one. I purchased the D-Link DI-784 dual link A/G router and am happy to say that it works substantially better. I use the 360 as a media center and for gaming. If you set up the 360 to use the 802.11A connection, things have been, at least for me, substantially better. Before I had the occasional disconnect when listening to music and the occasional slow down with streaming HD-TV. With this model, no issues at all. Give it a shot if you have any performance issues with your current router. No complaints here.

2 out of 5 stars Probable Heat Issue - Agree with other users.......2007-03-09

I have had the exact same problem others describe. It started off with a lock-up maybe once every few days, and then became progressively more frequent, until recently when it was locking up every 15-30 minutes.

As a last ditch effort, I removed the outer case from the unit so it is sitting with circuit board exposed - have not had a lock-up for 48 hours. That suggests to me a high sensitivity to heat.

I decided to replace it rather than wait for it to progress any further. D-Link should probably offer something to users for such a seemingly frequent problem.

1 out of 5 stars I'd give it ZERO Stars if I could. STAY AWAY!.......2006-11-28

I live in an area with a lot of wireless G traffic, so I wanted to pick up a wireless A router and avoid interference. The DI-784 seemed like a great router to start with, markedly better signal on 11a than 11g and no concerns to start with.

Then within about 3 months it started locking up, requiring power resets to get working again. It started off happening every few weeks or so, then every couple of days, and eventually it was a flip of the coin whether it would make it past 5 minutes. After many emails and phone calls to customer support (half of which were contradictory and none of which were all that helpful... if you can even get through to someone at all) and several firmware updates, I finally received the privilege of paying my own shipping to send it back for a replacement.

I received a different used (and supposedly repaired) DI-784 back a couple weeks later that promptly failed with the exact same problem within one hour of pluging it in. After several more emails and phone calls, I'm now about to send it back for the second time in exchange for a DI-624 router (a cheaper model and probably refurbished as well). But hopefully it will at least work.

I'm convinced from my experiences with this router and D-Link customer service that this is a fundamentally flawed product. A product with a problem that D-Link has no solution for short of giving their customers the run around and hoping that they eventually give up and go away.

I highly recommend you save yourself the wasted time and money by just "going away" now... to another manufacturer.

Same problem as most people here: after a year or so of not being able to use this along with a DWL-7100AP to bridge two parts of a subnet because of firmware related issues on one or the other of those devices and mostly incompetent support, the DI-784 started to lock up whenever the A radio is enabled. When A turned off and only G used, the router is fine, but I cannot bridge as I hoped to (using A as backhaul.)

Plus DHCP is flawed on both devices (and it looks like flawed also on VDI-624 Verizon installed for FIOS and I kept running for a while instead of DI-784 when it started locking up. Must be a D-Link specialty...)

I had also to return my original DWL-7100 that died after a few months of just sitting there and not being operational anyways.

Heat is likely to be to the origin of the demise of this DI-784 PoS indeed. Too small vents in the case. Some component must become damaged at some point and then lock ups become more and more frequent... Now they occur systematically, just a few seconds after enabling the A radio.

This ought to yield a class action lawsuit (actually I believe it has, but the outcome was more in favor of the law firm than the users. Anyways, D-Link lost it.) D-Link also lost me as a customer. For good. And I will make darn sure my advice to keep off their stuff, grounded on irrefutable personal experience, gets around enough so it will cost them a few thousand times more in missed sales than their crap cost me!
