Product Description
The Hawking HWL2A is an advanced version of the HWL1 and improves on many functions of the previous model. The most obvious is the addition of a Hi-Speed Wireless-G USB 2.0 Network Adapter for Apple Users (Mac OS 10 - 10.3) as well as the ability to differentiate wireless networks with security enabled. The addition of a WiFi Adapter allows the user to detect an 802.11b or 802.11g wireless signal and effortlessly connect to that signal by attaching their Apple laptop or desktop directly to the HWL2A via USB 2.0. The enclosure design is made of a high quality parts with colors to match your Apple iBook and iPod. Apple OS specific wireless utility software is included for accessing advanced features of the WiFi Adapter. The hassle of powering up your laptop and connecting to wireless "Hot-Spots" is now significantly simplified by the HWL2A. Simply push the "Locate" button on the HWL2A, detect and connect. No more guessing and configuring each specific wireless "hot-spot." The HWL2A is equipped with a re-designed flip up directional antenna. When detecting wireless networks, the Hi-Gain Directional Antenna helps the user determine exactly where the source of the wireless network is coming from by showing stronger signals at different angles. Also, when connecting to a wireless network, the Hi-Gain Directional Antenna guarantees the strongest link possible and provides greater distance than Apple Airport Cards due to its advanced 5dBi Antenna. The HWL2A also automatically recharges its batteries when connected to a laptop so you never have to worry about replacing the batteries.

returned.......2007-01-14
Sadly could not make this piece of equipment work with my machine. It had to go back!
BAD tech support is the real problem!.......2006-08-28
After repeated phone calls to Hawking and Road Runner, we gave up trying to connect and bought a used Airport card on eBay. When we still couldn't connect, we finally figured out that the WEP password needs to be entered with LOWER case letters, in spite of the fact that it appears on the bottom of our wireless router in UPPER case letters.
Absolutely TERRIBLE.......2006-05-01
The Hawking HWL2A is one of the worst products I have ever bought. To begin with, the installation did not work right. It took two restarts and a physical disconnection and connection of the device for my computer to see it. The installation manual mentioned an uninstaller file on the CD that was not there at all. The device was very unstable and failed to recognize a wireless router that was IN THE SAME ROOM. Tech support was non-existent. After being kept on hold for nearly an hour, I gave up.
I wasted a lot of time trying to make this device work. Please don't waste yours and stay away from it.
Worked Well For Me.......2006-02-07
I bought this for my Mac Mini because I didn't want to go to the trouble of taking in my Mac to have an internal Airport card installed by tech support. I had used a similar product for the PC and it worked well, so I thought I would give it a chance. My experience was that it worked well and made strong connections with a DLink access point upstairs (the Mac is in the basement). The only minor problem I encountered was that sometimes when booting the Mac it would not find the Hawking adapter and I would have to pull the USB cable out and then reconnect it again. This only took a couple of seconds, and then the Mac found the connection right away. The USB cable connected into a USB hub, so that might have been responsible for the issue. I also tried the adapter on a friend's G4 iBook and it worked well. The adapter includes some software that helps find hot spots and it picked up some free ones, so that is a nice addition. It has a long USB cable to help position the adapter, so I was able to find a stronger signal by moving the adapter around. I have never used the Airport card, so I can't compare this one to that, but my experience was very positive.
PROBLEMS AND MORE PROBLEMS.......2006-01-04
I tried to get this to work with my G4 running 10.4.3 it would read out a strong signal but was unable to connect to the web.According to tech support, they " don't know anything about Macs." I think it is a software driver problem and will check back later. I was told by the manager of COMP-USA that all that have been sold have been returned. Don't waste your time!!
