Bearing absolutely no resemblance to the 1980s TV series that helped to propel Michael Mann into big-time filmmaking, Miami Vice is the kind of serious, and seriously stylish, crime drama that Mann does better than anyone else. As written by Mann himself, this undercover sting thriller doesn't reach the peak intensity of Mann's 1995 classic Heat, and it lacks the tight, nail-biting suspense of Collateral, but that doesn't mean it doesn't occasionally pack a wallop. As Miami detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs (respectively), Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx don't have to do much but mumble their plot-thickening dialogue and look ultra-cool in the casual cop attire, and their partnership is rather lifeless on screen (perhaps owing to the fact that this was a troubled production, with an actual shooting that occurred during filming, and Foxx's refusal to risk his life on dangerous locations in South America). But once Mann shifts into high gear with a plot to foil a powerful drug kingpin (Luis Tosar) and his ruthless middle-man (John Ortiz), Vice pays off with the kind of smart, realistic action that Mann's fans have come to expect. With Chinese superstar Gong Li as Crockett's love interest on the wrong side of the law, Miami Vice covers territory that's a little too familiar, and one suspects Mann's screenplay might've been punched up with a polish or two. Still, this is an above-average crime thriller that demands and rewards close attention, with a climactic shoot-out that's pure Mann, worthy of the brooding drama that precedes it. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars WHERE IS PHILLIP MICHAEL THOMAS?.......2007-06-11

This was a well told story here, taken from numerous episodes of my favorite TV show of all time, the original MIAMI VICE. Most people do not know that Hollywood had no plans to do VICE. Lobbying by EDWARD JAMES OLMOS is what brought the project to fruition. It was indeed a good movie, but I really do miss DON JOHNSON, PHILLIP MICHAEL THOMAS, EDWARD JAMES OLMOS,MICHAEL TALBOT,JOHN DIEHL,OLIVIA BROWN and SANDRA SANTIAGO. Why did not the director, MICHAEL MANN include Olmos in the flick? I don't know. What I do know is that I enjoyed the TV series immensely and the movie was good and well told.

4 out of 5 stars You'll like it if you liked COLLATERAL.......2007-06-10

This hits the refresh button on the old groundbreaking '80s cop show, bringing it into the twenty-first century and making it much darker and grittier than its predecessor. Gone is the music video flash, the neon colors, the cheesy comedy-sidekick informants like Izzy and Noogie, and the rock music over the gunfight scenes. Gina has changed from a sassy sex-object brunette to a quietly lethal blonde. Even the scale of the story has increased along with the level of technology used by the drug runners they're trying to shut down. It's more dramatic thriller that plays like an unofficial sequel to COLLATERAL than action movie, but it's good.

3 out of 5 stars Directors cut is really good.......2007-06-07

I enjoyed this one at the movies, but this new cut is much better. A real treat, very stylish. great extras on this disc too.

1 out of 5 stars A must miss.......2007-05-31

The theatrical version of "Miami Vice" was a huge disappointment. It lacks a coherent plot, and like its TV counterpart, it's all style (or wants to be) and very little substance. About the only thing going for it is the atmospheric cinematography. But with little to no plot, it is a hard one to sit through.

The always stellar Jamie Foxx is completely wasted - he has little to do but act as back up for his hot headed partner (not a bad way to collect a multi-million dollar payout); the other detectives on the team have literally no screen time at all.

I was expecting a lot more considering it was directed by Michael Mann. It wasn't even on par with a cheesy Jerry Bruckheimer film. I was shocked that two relatively good actors were reduced to this tripe - the acting was so stiff that Colin Farrell (who needed a shower desperately) makes Don Johnson look like a thespian.

4 out of 5 stars Fans of the television series beware. This is a dark and deadly crime drama........2007-05-30

Instead of making a Miami Vice parody movie, or simply revisiting the television era with younger actors and a fresh plot, director Michael Mann takes the basics of Miami Vice and plants it firmly in 2006. Here Crockett and Tubbs are tough, no nonsense cops who's lives are on the line. Here the stakes are high, the villains are cunning, and the payoff is intense.

First things first, this is not an action film. It's not trying to be one. Instead it's a crime drama, delving into the worlds of cops (and a bit of the criminals) in the Miami area. Instead of creating a series of climaxes (as he did in "Heat") this movie is closer to "Collateral". It builds and builds with sparks flying here and there until the whole thing erupts in an excellent fire fight.

The script is tight, and moves a brisk pace. Viewers need to pay attention and have an ear for accents (there are several floating around during the movie and I found it helpful to have the close captions on). Direction is typical Michael Mann; everything has an elegant coolness to it. Miami looks awesome in many of the shots of the film. The movie is visually dark with lots of blue hues in it, giving it a definate visual style.

Sound effects were very good. I especially liked the gun battle at the end of the film. The weapons sounded realistic (not Hollywood). I also enjoyed the score and music used in the film (fans of the television will be disappointed in the lack of 80's nostalgia).

The only weak points were casting. Jamie Foxx and Naomie Harris were excellent and I found their relationship to be interesting and handled very well. On the flip side I found Colin Farrell adequate at best and bland at worst. He didn't seem to carry the part off as well as he could have. In addition Gong Li, a beautiful woman and superb actress, was lacking something. I'm not sure if her chemistry with Farrell was to blame, or if working in English was difficult, but she is great in certain scenes and in others she didn't click for me.

All told, I enjoyed the film. I wished it had been a bit better (and I think different casting would have solved my main problems), but as part of Michael Mann's delving into the world of crime and cops, this is a solid entry.
