Product Description

SMC's Barricade Cable/DSL Broadband Router (SMCBR14UP) combines a Broadband router with a 4-port 10/100 Mbps dual-speed switch with Automatic MDI-MDIX ports, Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall security, network management, parental controls and Virtual Private Network (VPN) pass-through support. NAT support and a built-in DHCP server mean that this router can provide simultaneous Internet access and automatic configuration to up to 253 PCs using a single IP address. Furthermore, its integrated USB and parallel print servers, which can be used simultaneously, make printers more accessible to network users. The SMCBR14UP sets-up easily with its EZ 3-Click Installation Wizard. Its integrated firewall provides protection against hacker invasions, such as Denial of Service (Dos) attacks, by analyzing individual data packets as they pass through the router. Authentication via host name, domain name PPPoE, MAC address cloning and MAC address filtering, prevents unauthorized access.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars New Version not as good as the original.......2006-11-28

I had owned the SMC 7004 version of the router/print server for several years and it worked perfectly. It recently died and I replaced it with the newer version, the SMCBR14UP, as there are not a lot of other choices and I have always had good experiences with SMC's products. I could never get the SMCBR14UP to work properly. I have a DSL Modem/Router with built-in firewall (the same one that I used with the SMC7004) and when I connected the SMCBR14UP, everything became extremely slow. I turned off almost all of the features and made numerous configuration changes and nothing seemed to fix the problem. I realize having 2 routers can create a problem, but I have always been able to get it to work in the past. I called SMC tech support twice and they were not able to provide much assitance, since nothing was technically broken. I am attempting to return the product. Let's hope it goes well. Since I have 3 computers that access the internet through my DSL modem/router and all 3 need to print to my 1 printer, I found the Linksys PSUS4 (4 port switch with USB printer server). IT WORKS GREAT! The Linksys is the same price and was much easier to setup, since it is a switch and not a router. I realize the 2 products are not the same, but if you don't need the router / firewall, the Linksys is a great switch/print server.
