I also must admit, while I've already spent 120 hours on the game, it isn't a very rewarding experience. The story line is too serious and boring. Plus you forget all the characters and plot points after killing 50 marks and not getting anything worthwhile for your efforts. I don't appreciate finding the excalibur in a damn chest in the middle of nowhere, I would prefer to get it as a reward for defeating the swordsman or anything that put meaning to getting it.
Another problem is the fact that all the characters end up the same once you have gotten enough lps. Thus the characters aren't individuals, which really hurts the whole rpg feel. My fran could be an archer, but she could also be a lancer, or a samurai at any given moment. And everyone has all the spells and all the techniks!
But I also must admit the gameplay is much better than FFX, Except the summons which are just weak! Sure the game is linear, but at least the path is wide. I just wish these square games would give better rewards to people who put time into the games, just like in DQ8 when you find all the medalions and all you get is a lame mace and the king on the throne with words instead of getting a cutscene, or a truly useful weapon.
A New Challenge.......2007-06-10
I have played every Final Fantasy game, with the exception of the MMORPG, since FF7. FF12 offers a very unique and new challenge to players. It was nice to go throug the game and not beat every boss on the first try. Some even took several test runs and subsequent planning and character building to defeat. Definitely a welcomed challenge for the seasoned player.
FF 12 or as I like to call it Star Wars.......2007-06-08
Im sure ill be lynched for even daring to utter a bad word about this game but here goes.
1. The game has a plot almost obscenely ripped off from star wars. Where the other games had nods to the great American epic, this title blatantly pirates the themes. Here let me give you a run down of the story.
A young kid(Luke) goes on a great quest to stop the evil empire, and on the way he enlists the aid of a sky pirate(Han) with a ship(millenium Falcon)and his inhuman sidekick(chewbacca) and together they storm the emperial fleets flag ship(star destroyer) To rescue the princess(leah) who is the leader of the resistance(rebel alliance). Along the way they are chased by a man in full armor and mask with a deep hollow voice(vader). Does any of this sound familiar to anyone. Christ you even start out in a desert city!!!
Next point. While the graphics are amazing 12 has made the same mistake that 10 did. RPG are about freedom and exploration not about graphics. The areas in the game while rich and beautiful start to feel an awful lot like levels, with no world map or things to interact with. Its more or less a straight shot along a fairly linear path. You cant explore anything.
battle system. Here is what really pisses me off. The FF series has slowly but sure begun selling out to the obnoxious throngs of action platform and fighting gamers. ITs an RPG its supposed to be strategy driven. Now you dont even control your part members. Everyone runs around and fight on their own and most of the time its utter chaos. equipping your party to simply overpower enemies is your only real strategy. The gambit system while fun to customize makes no sense and takes away most of the action from you. The game has more or less started to play itself!! It has basically turned into diablo with airships with the addition of random treasure chests and repetitive battles against the same monsters. Most of the time the game turns into a blur of lines going everywhere and you just have to hope your characters arent doing something stupid.
The characters are underdeveloped and uninteresting. Never since ff8 have I seen such boring characters. The sky pirate is about as interesting as it gets, and more or less ends up being the main character. The voice acting makes ff10's wonder years cheese seem welcome. Everyone sounds like they are dosed to they rafters on valium. Oh but dont worry there isnt much character interaction. The group is just haphazardly strung together and they all just sort of go with it.
The ability and magic system is really really nice for the first part of the game. You get points to spend in order to customize your people and if you are like me you try to do it in a way that makes sense for the particular character. You can even choose the weapons and armor they use. However, and this is my big gripe since 7. With the lack of a class system, all of your characters start to lose their nich towards the end of the game. When any of the characters can use any ability it makes party selection somewhat arbitrary. You may as well pick three and stick with them for the whole game. You can strategically shift people in and out of battle during, which is a cool feature, but lets face it, all the b squad really needs to do is pop in long enough to hurl a few phoenix downs and then its back behind the scenes.
Ok thats enough for the bad.
The good. Side quest city! In fact I would venture to say that a good half of the game is side quests. This sort of makes up for the non free roaming element in that you are going back and forth doing cool things alot! You can stop and do quests throughout the game before moving the story ahead too instead of being confined to the very end. One more bad thing though. The rewards you get for doing these quests are more often than not nowhere near worth the task itself. OF course completeing the thing is reward enough to me. However you will start to get irritated when you defeat the uber kind god dragon and get a measily 1500 gold or some equaly useless sundry. In fact when you get a weapon its usual one you will be able to buy in the next town, or after the next quest.
Oh man I started complaining again. hold on hold on.
let me wrap this up by saying this. Im a diehard rpg purist and I was deadset on hating this game from the getgo before even playing it. It flew in the face of all I love about RPGs. however, even I cannot deny that the game is damned addictive, and when no one else was looking I think I may have actually smiled a couple of times. Its barely an RPG but for all that guys its still a fun game! worth playing worth getting through. maybe worth playing twice...but not thrice.
Horrid is an overstatement for this game........2007-06-04
I like Final Fantasy games, I really do. When I first heard about the new battle system a while back, I turned my head, throwing away the idea. I eventually got bored and decided to try it.
I wasted 12 hours of my life before realizing this game blows, big time. I'm all up for a real time battle system, and even the idea of mixing real time and turn based is a good idea, if done right, which in this case it was done as bad as possible it seems.
For one, you can't ever run from a battle, unless you go to another screen, because as soon as you're away, your characters put up their weapons, and while doing so they stop, and the enemy catches up to you and ding! Battle resumes.
Now, that's not the only reason I hate the battle system.. It's just.. Uninspired. It was a pretty good idea.. But not all good ideas turn out good, they should've just made it either all real-time, or all turn-based, that's all I'm going to say on the battle system.
Now the characters.. Not a likeable one at all, I tried to like at least one, I just couldn't. And if I can't like at least one character, it just makes the game painful..
Anyone who claims this to be the best of all Final Fantasy's.. Needs to go re-play the other ones, hell, even X-2 (which wasn't a bad game at all.)
This game sucks, period.
Great game! A must buy for final fantasy fans`.......2007-05-30
Everything about this game was great. I've played most of the games in the final fantasy series and this game was one of my favorite. The storyline was great and was interesting. The new battle setup was a great addition and I hope they keep it for further final fantasy installments. Bottom line is that I loved this game.
