I bought this for my 17" Mac Book Pro. It works perfectly connecting my firewire 400 external drives and DV camcorders to the MBP's firewire 800 port, so it's performance definitely rates 5 stars.

I agree with the previous reviewer about the length. Initially I was concerned because the distance it stuck out of the side of the MBP, it might damage the 800 port if bumped or pushed slightly up, down or sideways while connected. However, I've used it now for about 10 months, and all is well.

The downside is that it's another gadget to keep track of, and you do have to be careful not to bump it when plugged in.

Purchased this adapter for the lone built-in FireWire 800 on a PowerMac G5 and use it as a FireWire 400 connection. I would rather separate my FireWire 800 devices to another bus by installing a PCI-X FireWire 800 card than share the same bus along the FW400 devices. In theory FW400 devices will not slow down FW800 devices in the same bus connection, but that's the theory so you can not be assured due to different manufacturers licensing the technology.

I'm surprised at the build quality of this small piece of device. The color white rubbler-like mold is cool along with the black plastic protruding FireWire 800 connection. SIIG has been a reputable company so you won't make a mistake purchasing the product.

The only drawback is the lenght of this adapter. It's around an 1.5 inches long. It's protruding too much rather than try to be as stealth alongside the computer.

Another disappointment is the price Amazon is offering with the free shipping. If you look around online you will find the price is below USD9.00. I'm hoping Amazon competes and adjusts their prices soon.
