Product Description

NETGEAR's Double 108 Mbps Wireless PC Card injects dynamic force into your home or small office notebook PC. When used with an optional WGU624 Double 108 Mbps Wireless Firewall Router, you can access both a normal 108 Mbps network, as well as a private 108 Mbps network, free from interference by other neighboring wireless traffic. The second wireless network acts as a "carpool lane", free from other traffic and thus suitable for applications such as video streaming. In addition, new XR technology can achieve range up to 3X greater than 802.11g. What's more, installation is simple - in fewer than five mouse clicks, Smart Wizard Install Assistant has you up and running full speed ahead. Energizes your network with blazing 108 Mbps performance on each of two individual streams. When two WG511U adapters are used with a WGU624 router, the combined throughput of both can be up to twice that of a similar two-PC setup with single 108 Mbps Wireless Router. One stream can be used for normal internet surfing, while the "Double 108" stream can be used as a special additional network for your premium applications. XR Range technology allows range up to 3 times greater that typical 802.11g wireless networks.

5 out of 5 stars Works with Windows XP!.......2007-01-25

I am not a computer wizard, but I have understood that a lot of stuff don't seem to work with Windows XP. I got my card for $19 refurbished from TigerDirect, and have only good things to say about the product and the seller. It arrived in a timely fashion, and from the time I inserted the installation CD until I was online, using the card, it took 29 minutes. Maybe part of the trick is to follow the enclosed directions to a tee. Like I said I'm not a computer wizard, but I had no problem whatsoever installing or using it (so far!)
I live in a small apartment so maybe it's not surprising that my signal seems very strong; I'm moving along nicely online (DSL) and no slower than when I was using the cable. I really like the portability the card provides, and gives laptop a new meaning...I have not ventured outside the apartment to see how long the range is. Neither do I know if I'll ever need the double wireless feature this card offers...but you just never know...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent range, and works with Mac OS.......2007-01-14

This card works with Mac OS 10.4 without any setup whatsoever, so don't buy into that stuff that's like "pay us money blah blah blah." And it also has awesome range.

5 out of 5 stars Simply excellent! Also good for packet sniffing........2006-05-02

I decided to buy this card from Netgear when I have already worked with an identical device from Atheros (engineering sample) for a long period of time. As a networking professional, I have nothing other than praises for this card. Amateurs may need to pay attention though.

Pros:

1. Long range - This card has excellent range. Of course, a card can only be good when its receiving ability is as good as its transmitting ability. There is no use to be a good listener but a mediocre speaker in a WLAN network. This card is good at doing both.
2. a + g capable - It gives you the goods of both worlds! When it is paired with a WGU624 router, it is "supposed" to give you twice the throughput of 108Mbps when both bands are used at the same time. More details below.
3. It works in "monitor mode" - This is the biggest reason why I bought a bunch of these cards. With the right driver from Atheros, you can use this card to sniff packets with WLAN sniffers like Airopeek. I have also used it with Kismet, Ekahau, and a whole bunch of other professional WLAN tools (Linux and Windows). I used to work with WAG511, but they are no longer manufactured. WG511T is a perfect replacement! (Good for war-driving too! If you are into that kind of activity)

Gotcha:

This card is supposed to pair with WGU624 (please read my comment on this device, if you want to know more about it), but the router is having so many issues that you may want to think twice before you buy it. Without the router, you will get no a + g turbo-mode bonding, and that means you get no 2x108Mbps theoratical throughput.

As for Netgear's technical support, you should not be expecting much from it.

5 out of 5 stars Great product.......2005-08-12

Great addition to the A/G router, Download speed reached 2Mb/Sec, recommend, not as stable as Linksys but sure as hell faster.

5 out of 5 stars was easy to install.......2004-11-10

I ran the driver installer, plugged in the card, typed in my WLAN's security settings, and was on the network.

It worked on both an XP-Home and a Win2000 laptop, and included the option of using WPA (PSK) security. :)

My SMC8204WBR (802.11g) A/P-router is down in the basement behind the furnace, and I'm upstairs in the opposite side of the house. It's getting decent signal strength. This card's reporting 48Mbps link rate, which is fine since I don't have a Netgear "100Mbps+ high speed" A/P.
