Amazon.com Review

The TI-5320SV is a large, capable, commercial-grade desktop calculator that fortunately doesn't suffer from any of the somewhat clunky keyboard problems we've experienced with some similar Texas Instruments calculators. The only things it really lacks that we've seen on other devices are dedicated tax keys that can apply a standard user-selected tax rate to any figure that is entered or output.

However, it's what the TI-5320SV does have that counts, and this machine offers plenty of features. There are eight selectable decimal display modes, including floating, fixed (0, 2, 3, 4, and 6), and modes for addition and multiplication. Another switch let us establish rules for rounding fractions up or down, and a dedicated grand-total key made it easy to aggregate the totals from several calculations. As mentioned above, some TI calculators we've tested have keys that are somewhat shaky and hollow-sounding when pressed, but the TI-5320SV doesn't have this problem. The keys are large, sturdy, and well-shaped, and they're spaced perfectly so they aren't hard to reach but are nearly impossible to press accidentally.

The two-color printer deserves special mention. It's pretty loud, like all impact ribbon printers we've ever tested, but it's also very powerful. It literally stamps figures into the paper, leaving them legible but making it harder to accidentally smear the ink. It's likely an unintentional side effect, but useful nonetheless. The 12-digit display is also worthy of praise, as it uses relatively large, green illuminated letters that are easy to read regardless of ambient lighting conditions. This is a solid, tough calculator that obviously was designed to take some abuse while still providing business users with enough valuable features to make it an indispensable office tool. --T.
