Amazon.com Product Description

Designed with power users in mind, the TI-86 graphing calculator has all the power and functionality of the popular TI-85 but with significant enhancements aimed at students of college mathematics, engineering, and science. The TI-86 includes a function evaluation table, deep entry recall, seven different graph styles with multiple line and shading options, and slope and direction fields for differential equations. In addition, the TI-86 boasts 96 KB of user-available memory--three times more than the TI-85. There's also a new function evaluation table which shows numeric output for function, polar, parametric, and differential equation modes.

The TI-86 runs with programs designed for the TI-85 and includes all the same matrix features, but with a new matrix editor that allows the user to view and edit matrices in two dimensions. You can also view multiple lists and attach formulas to those lists for automatic computations. A new aspect of the TI-86 is the ability to customize product functionality with machine language programs downloaded from TI's Web site. Besides the strong graphing abilities, the TI-86 also has powerful calculus features like integration, derivatives, minimums, maximums, roots, and arcs. It also supports Z80 assembly language programming.

The 64 x 128 high-contrast pixel screen displays eight lines of 21 characters each plus two levels of display menus. With the TI-86, you can link to other TI-86s and TI-85s via the input/output port, and to CBLs, CBRs, and computers. --Dana Van Nest

5 out of 5 stars BEST GRAPHING CALCULATOR EVER.......2007-03-31

I've used them all, the entire ti series that is and I find out something new about this calculator new each day. I've been using one for over 6 years and when the I/O port broke on it I bought another used one because they are sooooo reliable.

1 out of 5 stars A lot of hype, but it quickly fizzled.......2006-10-02

Bought this product recently based on recommendations for an advanced math/ scientific calculator. Apparently, TI has almost all the schools eating out of their hands by having classrooms make these calculators mandatory in many classes.
I will say that the calculator features a lot and you can even purchase more applications to dowload at TI's Website. However, the calculator is complicated to use, and you almost need a course to learn how to use it. Furthermore, the functionality is poorly designed and if you press a wrong button the calculator will often freeze on you.
At the high price for these TI calculators you would think that they would have gotten all the bugs out. But let me assure you they are definitely there, and you would be better served to get a Casio or HP graphing calculator instead.

3 out of 5 stars Handy Calculator, It's Too Bad That it Doesn't Last.......2006-01-18

I bought my TI-86 two and half years ago. It took a little while to get used to - most of the useful functions are buried in submenus or submenus of submenus. Also, the manual that came with it was fairly useless; it's poorly indexed and does not do a good job of introducing the user to the calculator's functions.

Despite the lack of a decent manual and the excessive "submenu-ing" of functions, I've found that this calculator has so far had all the functions I have needed up through my third semester of college calculus. It's also very easy to program. Overall, I've been pleased with it over the last 2 1/2 years of use.

I would have recommended this calculator, but my calculator has been acting up lately. Just entering numbers on the calculator makes the screen contrast unexpectedly go up and down. Sometimes it unexpectedly dies. It's not a battery problem - I've already tried replacing the batteries. It's never been dropped and has been treated fairly gently. I'm dissappointed that I've paid so much money for a calculator that wasn't made to last.

5 out of 5 stars Strong, Sturdy, and Robust.......2005-12-02

I used my TI-86 from high school through a Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering. I still use the TI-86 today, and it works perfectly.

My TI-86 WAS RUN OVER BY AN SUV, and it still works perfectly!

Its has a robust feature set, including matrix operations, unit conversion, stats, complex numbers, polynomial solvers, support for hex/binary, and more.

And it's easy to program, in case you need to customize things.

Some friends swear by the HP calculators, which are apparently superior once you get used to the reverse-polish input notation. I never tried them out myself.

5 out of 5 stars Just as great as TI82.......2005-09-11

I used the TI82 way back and the TI86 is great along the same lines. Dont hesitate to upgade.
