5 out of 5 stars This is a Great calculator.......2007-05-29

I been using thsi calculator since I was a freshman in college. I used it for Math Modeling and Statistics. I did good in both of those classes because of my calculator. I am about to use it for Chemistry. The batteries last long and the calculator can be used for any math or science class. It was worth the money to buy it brand new.

5 out of 5 stars This is a scientific calculator, so, READ THE MANUAL..........2007-05-14

It is not as easy as the TI-86 I had in 2000, it is better than the TI-83.

In 2000, I had a great professor in Statistics I. He broke the manual down, of the TI-86, into 30 pages of simple English, and, I "got it" on how to work it. This manual is a little more complicated and assumes that you know the stuff already. They forget that their market is- those who DON'T know how to already, they're students!

So, here's what you do. Set aside a day, yes, A DAY, to read and understand the manual. BUY IT BEFORE CLASS STARTS!!! If you can, buy your textbooks early too and PRACTICE IT! If you do, you will be spared what I went through.

All and all, it is a great product that I reccommend, but, you have to practice on it!!! GOOD LUCK!

4 out of 5 stars ti-83+ pretty good.......2007-03-18

I'm not really 13, but don't have an account anyways. It's good because it has a large user base and well does some things okay. It can do most level 1 calculus things. Don't expect it to go farther than the high school level. Although it seems crappy (kinda of is comparted to ti-89 T) and a little to expensive, (it kinda is), it does its job well and has plenty of user made games and programs that excel the functionality of this calculator. This guide lasted me 6 years, well until the battery spring crapped up. I dropped in dozens of times on hard concrete and accidentally kciked it while picking it up and does fine. So anyways here are some key functions:

2-d graphing, numerical integration, summations, numerical derivatives, calculates slope, area under a cure graphically, BASIC programming editor, all functions found of scientific calcs, Matrices, linking, applications, some other stuff, Lists, just a lot of stuff, solver, polynomials.

Downloadable: 3-d graphing, calculation of pi to thousand digits or so, grayscale games, world map, symbolic differentiation, formulas, etc. and sound files.

This is not a really powerful calc, if you want something that will last you, I suggest a ti-84 + SE. It's 2.5x faster, 9x the memory, has a clock, looks cooler, (bad key contrast though), nice screen, usb connectivity, just a bunch of cool stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Comment... Just like everyone else.......2007-01-15

There are over 100 reviews. I am not saying the same thing again. I just throw my rating in.

All I can say is... You will be better off if you completely learn how to master this calculator.

5 out of 5 stars Great calculator!.......2007-01-10

This calculator is excellent. It's very useful for geometry, algebra 2, pre-calculus, and calculus. Definitely worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best calculator.......2007-05-01

This is one of the most powerful calculator in the market. Only other one that comes close to this one in terms of power and convenience is HP 50g.

Pros:
1. Many built in functions and applications.
2. Easy to use.
3. High res display (better than HP 50g)
Cons:
1. Display is little too dark.
2. No equation writer like HP 50g.

5 out of 5 stars great calculator!.......2007-04-11

My son uses this for his AB-BC Calculas class at school and says its the BEST! Don't know how you could make it through calculas without one!

5 out of 5 stars Great Calculator.......2007-04-05

Works perfectly, has all the features I need to get through my horrid calculus classes.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty nifty, but also a bit confusing.......2007-03-10

I've been using a TI-83+ for the past six years, and when the display stopped working, I decided to upgrade. I haven't used that many different kinds of calculators in my life, so I can't make comparisons between this one and its competitors. My main impressions up to now are that it's almost like a PDA with some of the functions it has, like the to-do list and the clock, so it was confusing to navigate the first time I turned it on. It took me over a minute to figure out how to get to the normal calculator screen. I'm not quite done with the learning curve, given that I'm still not sure how to use/do a number of things (and I'm certainly not using it to its full potential), but I don't think that learning curve is much worse than the TI-83+'s, and I fully expect this calculator to last just as long. The price tag did make me wince, but it IS an investment after all, like a computer or a car.

5 out of 5 stars Present to a friend.......2007-03-10

Since the TI was a present, I do not know a lot about this product.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not a replacement for the 32S-II.......2007-06-28

My old 32S-II died, and I wanted an RPN calculator to replace it. My ancient 15C is still running fine, but I keep it at home so I don't have to haul calculators back and forth. My antediluvian HP 45 is still functional, but barely. I really like RPN calculators.

I bought a 33S despite the funky keyboard. I found I could adapt to the oddball chevron key layout, and the tiny decimal point only bothered me occasionally. What drove my 2 star rating is the poor life of the calculator. It lasted barely more than a year, and then completely died. HP nevermore. I guess I'm stuck typing silly parentheses into my new $10 Casio fx-260 Solar. If that one dies, I'll just send in some boxtops and get another. "Ave atque vale," RPN.

2 out of 5 stars Okay, But not the old HP quality.......2007-06-07

Had to get this calc for the PE Exam. Basic, but not my old HP11 and 15 calcs. Calculator came with dead batteries and covered in sticky fingerprints from the factory. They may be making great profits, but seem to be sacrificing quality for cheap parts and labor. And what's with the limited stack and hard to read comma? If you need it for the PE Exam, get it, otherwise save up and purchase an older model on ebay.

5 out of 5 stars Go RPN and you'll never go back .......2007-06-04

This is an excellent calculator! The V-shaped keyboard layout doesn't hinder one bit and the display is easy to see and read. HP did a great job of writing the instruction manual with lots of examples that contain clear and concise step by step explanations about how to calculate with RPN. Once you try it, you'll wonder how you ever used your TI to solve those really long equations with tons of parenthesis. Don't believe the hype about RPN learning curve. It's a snap to learn and use for first timers.

4 out of 5 stars Basic User.......2007-05-26

I have been using the HP33S for several weeks now and am quite pleased with its basic performance. I wanted a straight forward scientific RPN calculator and that is what I got. Would really have liked a bigger ENTER key but now that I am used to the little one its no problem.

1 out of 5 stars Not good for Texas Instrament users.......2007-05-25

This calculator, although it might allow you to see what you are typing in, it does not allow you to edit anything once you have entered it. This is by far the most terrible thing about this calculator. I would say that if you are not used to using HP calculators, don't get this one. Get the Texas instraments TI-30X-IIS, you will get alot more for your money.

Amazon.com Review

There are many inexpensive scientific calculators on the market, but few boast the two-line display and other advanced features users get with the TI-30x IIS. The display shows the equation you are creating on the top line, and the numbers or symbols you are currently entering on the second line. Once the equation is solved, the results are displayed on the second line, and you can use the four arrow keys on the front of the calculator to edit the original equation in any way you like for a recalculation. Better still, pressing the up arrow repeatedly lets you browse through a cache of dozens of previous calculations, meaning you can look back to see the answer to a problem you solved two minutes ago, two days ago, or whenever.

The device uses solar power when possible but can fall back on the internal batteries (which are included) if there isn't enough light. The buttons wiggle around a little too much and require a firm keystroke to register input, but the fact that input can be followed by looking at the output on the first line helps to cut down on mistakes. There is a shift key that doubles the functions of most buttons, and although the TI-30X IIS isn't festooned with as many buttons or functions as some other calculators we've tested in this price range, it's still very capable. There are three angle modes (degrees, radians, and grads), scientific and engineering notation modes, and even one- or two-variable statistical modes. Five variables can also be assigned to their own memory slots. The documentation is lacking, as everything is presented on a single folded sheet of paper, but Texas Instruments did manage to pack several illustrated examples on the page. The calculator comes with a snap-on cover that fits on the back of the device when you are using it. The calculator carries a one-year limited warranty. --T. Byrl Baker

Amazon.com Product Description

The new two-line TI-30X IIS with the memory retention feature retains previous entries, memory values, and individual statistical elements, and is a great value for general math, algebra, trigonometry, statistics, science, and much more. It allows you to enter, delete, insert, and edit individual statistical data elements, and displays trigonometric functions in degrees and radians. It performs common and natural logarithms, fractions and fraction/decimal conversions, and degrees, minutes, seconds/decimal degrees conversions. The calculator features durable plastic keys and a protective cover, with a quick reference card and guide for easy assistance.

5 out of 5 stars nice calculator.......2007-05-14

good stuff! buy one! has all the keys and functions you need!

4 out of 5 stars Does what it's supposed to. Nothing more........2007-05-12

This calculator is a very basic scientific calculator. I recommend getting it if your school has a rule against graphing calculators and/or you are a cheap person who doesn't want to buy TI82 or higher or equivalent. I've never regretted buying this to replace the first one I bought for 5 dollars earlier that broke from old age.(I guess you can't expect a lot for 5 dollars postage)

2 out of 5 stars I hate the buttons on this calculator!.......2007-04-09

I had to get this calculator for a professional engineers' exam (it was one of 4 approved calculators to take into the test). I've been using it to study and HATE how difficult the buttons are to press. I'm quite speedy on my Texas Instruments TI-82 but this one is painfully rigid. I originally thought it was a good idea to go with an approved calculator that resembled by TI-82 to most so I wouldn't have to relearn where all the functions are. Now, I'm second-guessing that decision and hope I'm not too fast on it during the exam so that I don't come up with wrong answers. My fingers are crossed but I really do not like this calculator so far... if you have a choice, go with another one.

5 out of 5 stars Probably why the professor recommended it.......2007-03-09

This calculator is easy to use for the statistics problems I need it for. The probability key is pretty intuitive. Worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars great calculator.......2007-02-26

i bought this calculator for my biostatistics class. it has been great except for one thing. i can't figure out how to do factorials on it. other than that, it's perfect. highly reccommended.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars got it for PE exam, now I use it every day.......2007-06-28

This was one of the few calculators on the list for the PE exam. It was also the cheapest (I think). I bought it, and started practicing with it at work so I'd be comfortable with it at the exam. It turns out that I love the data entry format. I used HP's RPN for a LONG time and thought it would be difficult to switch, but this makes even more sense because you enter the problem EXACTLY how you would write it on the paper (i.e. square root sign comes BEFORE the number)! I don't even use my trusty old HP now unless I accidentally leave this one at home. I am even thinking about getting a 2nd one so I can have 1 at work and 1 at home to study with (and I've heard that sometimes calculators walk away during lunch hour at PE exams, so it might be good to have a 2nd hiding in my bag).

The only flaws I've found so far are the instruction manual, quick auto power-off and the plastic cover. The manual does not go into enough detail but there are several references available online so, not a huge deal for me. When I get close to the exam, I'll probably print out my favorite and take it with me. The quick power-off (after about 6 minutes) can be frustrating, but I haven't really had a huge problem with it.

The plastic cover is annoying because it snaps on and off instead of slides. I don't know why this bothers me, it just does. Also, it would have been nice if the cover was flat. Instead, it is slightly rounded with "feet" to stabilize it. The feet work great as long as the entire calculator is sitting on a flat surface but if one corner is off, the whole calculator rocks back and forth every time you hit a button. Also, with the cover snapped onto the back, it is kind of uncomfortable to hold in one hand and enter data. With the cover off it is better, but I'm worried I'll loose the cover.

I am definately happy that I purchased this calculator instead of the more expensive HP that was on the PE approved list.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-06-07

This little thing is really a gem! I'm shocked at how much math a $20 calculator can do. Really helped me get through the FE as this thing solves quadratic & cubic equations, and even does numeric integration and differentiation! A very well designed tool.

5 out of 5 stars Best calculator I've owned.......2007-05-30

Does everything I need it to do for engineering classes without all the extra frills and distracting buttons people never use.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent calculator for the price........2007-05-15

I bought the HP 33S last year for the sole purpose of taking the PE. I have been using HP calculators and the RPN logic for more than 20 years and felt very compfortable with it; however, the 33S was a dissapointment to me, for one reason, good luck trying to see the decimal point, so 33.457 looks like 33457, that one little thing turned me off from using the 33S, so I went and purchased the casio fx-115MS, what a calculator!!! So many functions, and ease of use, the two lines are a beauty, and the numbers are huge, and don't forget the decimal point, I can really see it. I think I'll buy another one as back up. Now, if only the Casio can take the PE test for me!

5 out of 5 stars Casio FX-115MS, a very good calculator.......2007-05-10

I have been a faithful user of the HP 48G since 1995. However I needed a calculator that is permitted on the EIT exam. Since I am comfortable with Reverse Polish Notation entry format, my first inclination was to look for a HP product that is approved for the exam. However after reading the reviews on-line and seeing the price of the HP33S, I decided to look for an alternative. The TI 30XIIs and the Casio fx-115MS were viable options at a better price. I bought both of the TI and the Casio for comparison.

Both calculators are about the same size, approximately 6"(T)X 3"(W)x1/2"(D). The feel of the buttons/keys on the TI was a bit dull when pressed. The Casio keys had slightly more engaged-feel when depressed. The engaged-button feel helps when I am keying numbers without looking at the screen to know whether the calculator took the string of digits and operators correctly. The color scheme employed for button labeling on the TI does not make the "2nd" functions stand out. This is made worse by the shadow cast by the tall buttons, which make the lettering for the "2nd" functions harder to read. The Casio uses fairly distinctive colors for lettering and function schemes. This makes it easier and faster to find the correct key.

I find that for engineering problems, Casio had more built in buttons. Thus I don't have to always use "shift" or "2nd" functions. I also liked the layout of the buttons on the Casio. I feel it is a bit easier to find the right keys, due to more logical key placement for certain functions. On the TI, I have to spend more time hunting down the button.

A few reviewers have noted that the Casio manual that comes with calculator to be mediocre. That is also my perception after reading through the manual. The TI came with a manual and a practice guide. The TI manual is more thorough and sequential in presenting the information. The TI practice guide presents some simple problems and show the keys that need to be pressed. This helps get the user to become familiar with the key layout and input sequence.

To overcome the mediocre Casio manual, I searched on the internet and found a tutorial on how to use the fx-115ms written by a math instructor for his or her students. The tutorial is fairly detailed and easy to follow.

Overall, both the TI 30XIIs and the Casio fx-115MS are very capable calculators. However I found the Casio to be more suitable for my needs. I would give this Casio product somewhere between 4.5 to 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Good Value!.......2007-06-23

My wife teaches Middle School and purchased this for pre-Algebra after researching it on the web. Worked out perfect for her, and she considered it an excellent value for the money, and has had no problems with it. Easy to use. Instructions were easy to understand and useful.

4 out of 5 stars First non-RPN calculator in years.......2007-06-05

I had an upcoming exam that specifically prohibited programmable calculators, so while I have quite the "stable" HP RPN machines, all of them were out. The FX-115ES was what I found as a substitute, and I'm quite impressed, especially for the price (which is $18 at Target, BTW). The machine works well and is quite feature-laden and easy to use -- I believe it is the most powerful non-programmable, non-graphing machine out there, and at a price where you can afford a few spares to spread around your home, office, car, etc. so that you don't have to worry about losing one.

I've had tons of calculators over time, with the Casio FX-4000P (back in the late '80s) being the first truly memorable one (my brother had an FX-7000G, the first graphing calculator). I switched to HPs in college, and I am still an RPN die-hard (I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the 30th anniversary HP-35s this summer!), but I can still appreciate a quality product such as this from Casio.

4 out of 5 stars Compact and advanced calculator.......2007-05-20

For $20, this is a great calculator and more so since one doesnt need external batteries to operate it as it has solar cells. Only criticism I have about this calculator is that the solar cell needs to be taken extra care as they easily get dirt on them. But the calculator works really well. Highly recommended :)

4 out of 5 stars Great Calculator, Bad Instruction Manual........2007-05-13

As a student new to advanced calculators, this is a great one, It by itself is pretty easy to understand, but the instruction manual is very difficult to understand. I am not unhappy that I bought it. I feel that even without the help of good instructions I have been able to make good use of it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Calculator.......2007-05-07

I really like the natural language display. You can type the math just the way it looks in the book. I wish the instruction manual was more comprehensive.

5 out of 5 stars Great little calculator for on the go........2007-05-12

Great little calculator, compact and easy to use with all the scientific functions that I need...plus, it does not need batteries!

5 out of 5 stars Good calculator........2007-03-22

This is a fine calculator, and inexpensive. The only shortcoming I see is that it doesn't have a '1,000' separator. This makes large numbers hard to see quickly.

4 out of 5 stars As advertised.......2007-03-09

I had an old scientific calculator from Texas Instruments, and it was terrific. I used it since sophmore year in high school. When I thought I lost it, I purchased the Casio FX-260. It works just as described. Reasonably priced and stright forward. My old TI had an easier memory function, causing a learning curve on the Casio. Wish the memory function was like the TI. No other problems.

1 out of 5 stars button presses not registering!!.......2007-03-06

i bought this for an exam with restrictions about what kind of calculator I could have ... in my prep work I noticed a few times that button presses weren't registering on the screen (might also have explained some of my answers ;-() ... but as luck would have it in the exam it was happening OFTEN ... I was on the alert for it though so it might have always been the case. My fingers were feeling the "click" though ;-( Anyway ... a calculator that can't be relied upon to register button presses is USELESS!

5 out of 5 stars Great little calculator.......2006-12-08

The Casio fx Solar fraction calculator is used in teaching my math class of young , primarily Mexican mothers to prepare them for GED tests. Some calculators have been in use for years without failure. The solar feature is remarkable ,works in very dim light, and is inexpensive.

i cannot use it its too confusing. im used to the casio calculators. not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars great calculator.......2005-12-13

For the price, it is hard to beat this calculator. I've had this model for years and it is still going strong, with no problems or even a change of battery. Numbers are easy to read and the buttons are fairly large, with second functions labeled clearly. Lots of functions, and it is easy to use for stats. I also like the fact that it has an OFF button, which many models don't have. If you need a graphing calculator, of course this will not do, but for everyday use this model is a durable workhorse that I highly recommend.

1 out of 5 stars A dissenting opinion on a terrible calculator.......2005-06-23

I bought two of these calculators and neither performs well - the buttons are terribly sensitive to the point that we often accidently enter the wrong numbers, so we have to pay extra attention. Further, my calculator is currently displaying entirely different numbers than I am putting in - perhaps the battery is dying, but I have no idea how long it may have been doing this. I will definitely be looking for a different calculator next time around.

5 out of 5 stars Great simple calculator!.......2005-02-25

I have had this calc for roughly 7 years and i'm on my 3rd set of batteries. I mostly use my ti-83+ but whenever I need something quick or I can't use a graphing calc, I grab my trusty TI-30Xa! I love this calc!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Calculator, Great Price!.......2005-02-22

This is a great calculator for those who have problems with Trig or fractions. Allows advanced input such as: 5 3/5 + (20 32/33 X 105) - (34 + 3/8), and also converts fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions. Will also reduce fractional asnwers to lowest terms. A perfect calculator. As for the reviewer that doesn't know what batteries to use, it says right on the back of the calculator next to the battery symbol.

Solar-powered calculator for science and math Base conversion and calculations (Decimal, Hexadecimal, Binary, Octal) 15 Parentheses levels 3 memories 8 Physical constants Up to 4 pending operations Includes A76 battery (pre-installed), case and instructions

Amazon.com Product Description

Ideal for students at every level, from junior high school algebra to college calculus, the Texas Instruments TI36 packs a lot of punch in a small, inexpensive unit. This solar-powered calculator combines features for statistical analysis, Boolean logic operations, and unit conversions in one sleek package.

Math students will appreciate TI36X's ability to perform fractional equations and calculate angle units (radians, grads, degrees) when performing trigonometric functions. Everyone will find the calculator's English/metric conversions helpful.

The TI36Xs single-line LCD is a little difficult to read when the unit is lying on a desk, and users in need of graphing functions will have to look elsewhere. Overall, however, for a calculator in this price range, the TI36X provides enough power for most high-level math and science needs.

5 out of 5 stars Very hard to fine but worth buying if you do find it........2007-06-07

This is a great calculator. It is hard to find in stores so if you are thinking of getting one...hurry. You can't bet it.

3 out of 5 stars Solar only?! .......2007-03-14

I bought the 36X to replace an older 35 or 36 model (not sure which one) that I had in high school and misplaced. It has all the functions I want, and I'm so used to it I remember where they all are. I love the stored scientific constants, and the functions are exactly what I need to quickly calculate answers for my Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus classes (much quicker than most of my students struggling with their graphing calculator.)

My one gripe is a big one: On the old model, values that you stored in memory would be saved even if the calculator was turned off. They didn't get deleted unless you actually intentionally deleted them. In this model, they've mergedf the ON and the ALL CLEAR buttons, so that any clearing erases all your stored data. Yes, there's a CE button to just erase what's currently on the screen, but it's really been hard to re-train myself to think this way.

Since I have another TI (or maybe it's the old one) that is dual powered -- solar and battery -- that didn't have this problem, I know it's fixable. Just another symptom of TI cutting corners or ignoring the scientific calculator market to focus on their graphing calculators?

I found this calculator an extremly good deal for its price. 5 out of 5 stars This Sharp is SHARP.......2007-06-08

I had a calculator like this in college and worked great. I though an upgrade was needed. It's an easy scientific calculator to use and has a solar panel on it! It's feature that comes in handy! Excellent value too. Thanks again!!

5 out of 5 stars Great calculator for the price.......2007-06-07

This is a great calculator, it takes a little time to read the manual and learn all the features, this one just about does it all. I paid less than $15 for mine on amazon and with the shipping it was a real value. If you are looking for a calculator for a student, and if they are going to have need of more complicated features, this is the calculator to get.
I give it five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Sharp calculators are excellent!.......2007-05-06

I'll be honest. I can't really review this specific calculator because I bought 5 of them as a donation to a Native American reservation. They needed them for their school. But I know that Sharp calculators are always reliable. I own several.

5 out of 5 stars This calculator is a small miracle.......2007-04-07

Look at that price up there.

This calculator is a sophisticated number-crunching gizmo that will handle 99% of standard calculator use. Need a feature that's not available? Good news, this fella's programmable. It powers itself with freely available light, but yet has a battery for when lighting conditions are paltry. Its interface is lovely and thoughtfully conceived, it weighs less than your checkbook, and it's surprisingly durable: throw it around, let your Aunt Marge step on it, rub it with beef and give it to the dog for a while ... at the end it'll still work.

All of that, and it costs less than a pizza.

Back in 1972, Hewlett Packard released their HP-35 calculator (with the four standard arithmetic functions and twelve transcendental functions), and it cost $395. Don't forget inflation, because that translates to roughly $2100 in 2007. That calculator changed the world, and now here's a calculator that leaves the HP-35 in the dust -- in terms of speed and functionality -- and at less than 1/100th the cost.

Sure, there are lots of feature-rich calculators that you can buy in the check-out line at Walgreen's for only a few bucks, so you're probably wondering what makes this calculator so special. If you consider (a) its price, (b) its feature set, and (c) its overall utility, this calculator is currently at the apex, folks. By a *long* way. And its been there for several years. Speaking as a calculator snob, I'm usually unimpressed by anything less than a classic HP, but as far as the complete package goes, this calculator is surprisingly beautiful. I own two of them; one to keep in my bookbag, and another one "just in case".

With this guy, you're getting a lot of bang for very few bucks. It might not graph, it might not perform symbolic math, it might not use RPN or have a precision-engineered keypad with double-injection-molded keys -- and above all it's certainly not a computer -- but it's currently the best value out there in utility scientific calculators and nothing else comes close.
