Tired of those puny calculators with buttons the size of Tic Tacs and a screen that leaves you squinting? Give the EL-334AB a whirl. The large, sensitive buttons allow for quick calculating with few mistakes, and the screen uses relatively large letters that are easy to read across a desk. As an added bonus, the screen tilts up to 45 degrees, making this unit a viable desktop calculator as well as a practical handheld unit. The EL-334AB operates on solar power most of the time but can fall back on its included battery when you're burning the midnight oil.

Scanning the large keypad, we noticed first off the pair of yellow tax keys at the top. These let us enter a standard tax rate and then apply it to an entry or calculation with the press of a dedicated key. One will add the tax, and the other will subtract it. Obviously these keys can be used for all sorts of percentage calculations, and a separate percentage key is there to take care of everything else.

If you make a mistake while keying and entry, the backspace key lets you erase one digit at a time without having to clear the screen and start from scratch. Another nice touch was the grand-total key, which let us total the results of several separate equations that were stored in memory. Values are added to the grand-total memory each time the equals key is pressed. It's a feature not often found on calculators in this price range, and overall we found the EL-334AB an excellent choice for anyone looking for a combination of oversized keys and display, simplicity of operation, and tilting screen. --T.
