Amazon.com Review

The TI-1766+ is about as basic as calculators get, but it does have one aspect that sets it apart from the pack--an adjustable-tilt display that makes it equally suitable as a handheld or desktop calculator. The display can lie flat when you are holding the calculator in your hand, or tilt up to 45 degrees when sitting flat on a desk so you can easily read the numbers. Although the numbers aren't illuminated, they are very large and easy to read, and the fact that the screen can tilt to any angle let us position it so glare from overhead lights was virtually eliminated. The device operates on solar power, but it also has a battery in case your lighting isn't adequate.

Although the TI-1766+ obviously isn't designed for power users, it does have a few very useful tricks. One is a dedicated Gross Profit Margin key for easily figuring profits (or losses when used in conjunction with the +/- key). There's a square root key, and the unit can also handle constants through proper use of the equals key. A hard plastic cover keeps the unit protected when it is not in use, and it fits perfectly on the back of the calculator to stay out of your way and provide better stability when the screen is tilted up. In short, the TI-1766+ isn't fancy, but it's cheap, slim, and easy to read. The fact that it can pull double-duty as a small desktop calculator doesn't hurt either. --T. Byrl Baker

Amazon.com Product Description

The features of the Texas Instruments TI1766PLUS calculator make it well suited for home, school, or office. It is a handheld calculator that has raised keys, an adjustable-tilt SuperView display, and a three-key memory--features that make it both easy to read and easy to operate. You can quickly calculate sales taxes, tips, and discounts with the percent key. The GPM (gross profit margin) key calculates pricing and profits, and the change-sign key makes entering negative numbers simple.

The TI1766PLUS runs on solar and battery power, so you'll be able to use it anywhere and under any lighting conditions. It has an automatic power-down to conserve battery life, and it comes with a protective slide case that can be stored on back of the calculator when not in use.
