Sharp EL-338AB 12 Digit Semi Desk-Top Display Calculator
Amazon.com Review
Sharp's EL-338AB is very basic and inexpensive, but it manages to stand out in a crowd of similar devices by virtue of its size. It's not as large as the bulky printing calculators that rely on external power, but it's too big to serve as a practical handheld calculator. On the upside, this means that both the 12-digit display and the keys are relatively huge, so you may not have to grab for your reading glasses when using the machine. The display also tilts up to 45 degrees, adding even more value for those who plan to use it while it sits flat on their desk. The oversized keys also help to cut down on mistakes and are responsive without being too touchy. Should you make a mistake, a backspace key lets you delete the last number you entered and fix things without having to delete the entire line. The device is equipped with standard memory buttons and also has square root, percentage, and +/- keys. One nice feature is a grand-total button that will compute the sum of several previous calculations. The EL-338AB can also handle constants. A slider at the top let us choose from several decimal display modes, including floating, fixed (0, 2, 3), and an add mode. Another switch let us choose whether we wanted to round fractions up or down. The unit uses solar power unless the light hitting it is too weak, in which case it seamlessly switches over to its included internal battery. An illuminated display would be nice, but other than that the EL-338AB served well as an entry-level desktop calculator that isn't saddled with a bunch of extra features that few people use. At this price it's difficult to complain about a calculator that performs its job so admirably. --T. Byrl Baker
